Gerry Rafferty Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 4, 2011.
LONDON (AP) - Gerry Rafferty's agent says the Scottish singer behind hit songs "Baker Street" and "Stuck in the Middle With You" has died. He was 63.

Paul Charles confirmed Tuesday that his client, whose 1978 hit record "Baker Street" reached No. 3 in the U.K. and No. 2 in the U.S. music charts, had passed away following a long illness.

Rafferty wrote hit single "Stuck in the Middle With You" in 1972, while performing as part of the Scottish folk-rock band Stealers Wheel. The ode - or mocking tribute - to Bob Dylan's raspy voice grew new wings in film maker Quentin Tarantino's movie "Reservoir Dogs," and has sold more than a million copies worldwide.

He made headlines in recent years for his public struggles with alcoholism and had reportedly suffered liver failure.

Gerry Rafferty,
I also wish to add more on your great work in the entertainment music industry.
Baker Street is also a great piece of work that us fans still enjoy today and in the future when my time comes after we all leave the mortal coils of this life. Your song, Right down the line and baker street uplifts folks in everyday living and people need a lift and music does that. After all, in the Beautiful Word of Father God, The Holy Bible KJV, King David as a youth played the harp which would calm down King Saul who was troubled by a wicked spirit of stress and that holy harp music would drive off the stress, and Jesus Christ our Savior would praise Father God while praising God in prayer singing. Good music does that and your hits also drives off stress in peoples lives. Thanks for your musical work and the musicians and studios who make that music possible for ordinary people.
Also, for some reason unknown to me but you and Elvis Presley have a unique musical star look that caught my eye with both of you. When I saw you on tv as a kid your music and look caught my eye as with Elvis and that’s cool. Even though there is no connection with you and Elvis you are unique looking to me like Elvis was and so is KISS in some ways, but you got it, coupled with that unique look with your voice and sound. Thanks for being uniquely you and for your great music.

I remember fondly my first hearing of "Baker Street". I was driving from Fairbanks Alaska to Delaware and in the middle of nowhere, on a long, dark stretch of road in Montana, I was listening to a station on my illegally installed headphones on the truck radio. In the lonely darkness, I heard this haunting, eerie saxophone blazing out a tune to a song I hadn't heard before. I was startled enough to pull over and stop. I turned out the lights and under a spectacular star-filled Montana canopy, I listened to the end. I sat there, having a smoke and made it a point to find the song when I got home. And that tune, by a guy I never heard before, played in my mind for the next 1100 miles. Thank you, Gerry, for making my trip so much better.

We have belatedly learned of the sad and regrettable passing of Gerry Rafferty, the extremely talented songwriter/singer, who for 1/3 of a century, as our family’s favorite rock singer, satisfied our musical interests with his fascinating, attractive lyrics, plus his unique harmonies.

For over 25 years I had an international telephone friendship with his brother Jim, sometimes speaking with him as often as on a weekly basis.…until Jim and his family moved away from Kent. Jim is a great guy, and I really enjoyed our many conversations: not only about Gerry’s music and upcoming releases, but also about sound religious values and various family member happenings.

With Gerry having released as very many songs through the years as he did, there must undoubtedly be numerous as yet unreleased tracks/or lyrics of various kinds, perhaps at different levels of completion; which hopefully some day will be compiled or utilized into future albums yet to be sold. Certainly these creations could be of financial benefit both to his remaining family, loved ones and interested musical associates; plus also would be “welcome new musical material” available on upcoming cds for purchase to his many dedicated fans. (You might even want to include some of Jim’s recorded songs such as the lovely “Bishop’s Mountain.)”

Gerry, a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to you for all of your enjoyable musical talent and creativity through the years. And, although your passing seems tragic, premature and disappointingly untimely, I am truly glad for you that you will no longer have to worry about worsening health, nor any further uncomfortable hospitalization. The lyrics to your song,”Clear Day” perhaps(?) could describe how you might be at this time “looking back at all that you did on earth”….. and how things are for you now.

Gerry, we will miss you dearly. Along with our sympathy and prayerful condolences, we wish “All the very best!” to: your family, your friends and loved ones; and as well to: all the numerous persons who through the years were involved in so many ways in helping you to perform, produce and publish your unforgettable legacy of musical gifts!

With our love and gratitude,

Robert L. Weissberg (rlw1234) and family

Gerry, you will be sadly missed by your fans, friends and family, its a sad loss for us, but it is comforting to know you have made your peace within the chaos.
Fame is not what what you wanted but by sharing your talent it was inevitable.
We have no way of knowing what lies ahead since that lifetime ago in the Scotia days when you and Billy played at the head of the bill and the rest of us played catch up.

I discovered Gerry Rafferty at the same time most people in the U.S. did - back in '78 with "Baker Street". I bought the "City to City" album and was blown away at how good it was. Subsequently I had to get the rest of his albums and enjoyed each and every one. He was a great talent and should have had more recognition for his amazing songwriting abilities and his fantastic voice. He was and will always be one of my favorite singer/songwriter. Thank you Gerry for all you have given us. My heartfelt condolences to his family. He will be sorely missed.

On a wing and a prayer...

It’s always the same story, isn't it? You just don’t know what you’ve got... until it’s gone, Do you?
And those words have never been better represented than with the recent passing of the reluctant hero himself, Gerry Rafferty. We all know of him for his, "One Big Hit" in 1978, "Baker Street," but there was so much more than a flash in the musical pan, for the man to be revered. I hope you, as I, will be pleasantly pleased to re-acquaint yourself with a much underrated singer, songwriter, pianist and guitar player… that Gerry Rafferty in fact is, if only in our hearts.
Thank you Gerry, for leaving us with such a wonderful musical legacy to remember you by for a very long while.

I've just "found" this wonderful voice within the legendary song: Baker Street. I knew of his health and read about all that anticipating his end and now I am so sorry to learn about his death. I have purchased all his music. I'm on UTube all hours of the day to listen and read. I am so sad for us (the family - his fans and family). My very deepest heart felt condolences.

This is just heartbreaking. I found out about Gerry Rafferty's passing through a friend on facebook. I've been a fan since I was 9 years old when my mom bought me "Can I Have My Money Back?" I have all his records from the days with the Humblebums through his solo years. I'm not surprised by his passing, though. I knew he had been struggling with alcoholism for years. I was looking forward to some new music after he released "Life Goes On" a year ago. But now I must take solace in his legacy as a singer/songwriter. I definitely will miss him and can't help but mourn the loss. RIP Gerry, you were a great musician and a gentle soul.

First and utmost I want to express my sincere sympathy to the Rafferty family for their loss of Jerry. I’m so very sorry for their close personal loss.

For the rest of us, Jerry gave so much to the music world via his talent that not only will the entire music world miss him but all of us will be indebted to Jerry for his unique musical contributions. I listen to Baker Street today and enjoy Jerry Rafferty’s musical talent just as much as I did 32+ years ago. Yes I’m 60+ years old and I regularly listen to a few dozen musical artists from my youth and Jerry Rafferty is certainly one of my favorites. When I want to kick back and relax I simply turn the stereo up to ‘Medium Plus’ or ‘High’ and listen to ‘Baker Street’. Note that I sit in front of the stereo speakers so that my body not only feels but hears the beautiful saxophone and guitar notes of Jerry Rafferty.

Again, my sincere sympathy to the Rafferty Family.

My words, won't be enough. Gerry, your music meant so much to me in my youth when I needed it the most. I can remember a precise place and time with each song... "Stuck in the middle" 10 years old playing in my neighbourhood, discovering AM radio and all the music it played. "Baker Street", 15 years old and 500 kms from home for a whole summer making new friends listening to your song in our canteen playing late 60s vintage pinball machines... thank you for being part of my life even though you were unaware.
