Bubba Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 3, 2011.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Former NFL star Bubba Smith, who went from feared defensive end on the field to endearing giant in his successful second career as an actor, died Wednesday. He was 66.

Los Angeles County coroner's spokesman Ed Winter said Smith was found dead at his Baldwin Hills home. Winter said he didn't know the circumstances or cause of death.

Police spokesman Richard French added the death does not appear to be suspicious.

The top overall pick in the 1967 draft after a sensational career at Michigan State, the 6-foot-7 Smith spent five seasons with the Baltimore Colts and two seasons each with Oakland and Houston. He won the 1971 Super Bowl with the Colts.

"I'm saddened by it. I remember my first training camp in 1972 in Golden, Colo. I spent a lot of time with him there. He was a great guy. He was a giant, the biggest player on the field," Colts owner Jim Irsay said.

One of the best pass rushers in the game, Smith often drew two blockers, yet was effective enough to make two Pro Bowls and one All-Pro team. His best work, though, came in college, and Smith was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame in 1988.

"He was simply a good guy," former Michigan State teammate Robert Viney said in a statement released through the university. "His size made him an intimidating figure, but he was a real gentleman. He was a helluva player."

As an actor his most memorable role was playing Moses Hightower, the soft-spoken officer in the "Police Academy" series. He also appeared in such television series as "Good Times," ''Charlie's Angels," and "Half Nelson," and was a regular in the ground-breaking Miller Lite commercials featuring retired players.

Born Charles Aaron Smith, he played in high school for his father, Willie Ray Smith, in Beaumont, Texas, before heading to Michigan State, where he was an All-American in 1966.

"'Bubba' Smith was a great Spartan," Michigan State ath letic director Mark Hollis said in a statement. "As both a football player and later as an actor, 'Bubba' was a great ambassador for the University. It's only fitting that beginning this fall the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year Award bears his name."

At Michigan State he played on some of the school's greatest teams under coach Duffy Daugherty and was one of its best players. Fans in East Lansing, Mich., would chant, "Kill, Bubba, Kill" during games and his No. 95 jersey was retired in 2006.

"I will shed some tears tonight because I've lost a great friend," Viney said. "He never sought the spotlight. He was a humble man. As I remember him, I recall the chants of "Kill, Bubba, Kill" from the crowd in Spartan Stadium. He will be missed."

Smith was part of two of the most famous football games ever played. In 1966, he was at Michigan State when the Spartans and Notre Dame, both undefeated, played to a 10-10 tie. Michigan State finished second behind the t op-ranked Fighting Irish that season.

In 1965 and '66, Smith helped Michigan State go 19-1-1 and win consecutive Big Ten titles.

"Bubba was definitely a game changer as a defensive end," former Michigan State teammate Gene Washington said. "You simply didn't see guys with his size and quickness coming off the defensive line. His ability spoke for itself. He was a great teammate and a great leader. Bubba never had to say much because he led by example."

In 1969, Smith played for the Colts against the New York Jets in the Super Bowl. Led by Joe Namath, the Jets of the AFL upset the NFL champion Colts 16-7 in Miami.

Bubba you are already missed!!
My brother Floyd Smith, played football with Willie Ray and Bubba, the three Smith Boys. The night of the game Floyd stayed with the family.
Coach Smith liked coon, so my mother would bake them with sweet potatoes, and I would take it to school for Coach.
Every time I saw Bubba on TV, I would let my guest know I went to school with him. I was proud to see how he turned out to be famous, I knew someone that was a star.
You were called home to a better place, God's way not ours.

I thought he was great in the police academy movies. There was a scene in either the first or second one and a man comes up to high tower when he's in a car to yell at him and as he looks in the car he notices that the front seat has been removed and that he's driving the car from the rear seat. So the Guy quietly turns around with the funniest look on his face and returns to his own vehicle and leaves in a hurry.LOL.great movie!great man!

I dated Bubba the summer of 1970 before I was recruited from Morgan State College to NYC. He was such a nice person. I was the dancer for the Peobody Conservatory of Music Rock Concert Group and he came to see me dance. He made quite a stir sitting there on the front row. He also came out to Morgan on several ocassions to visit me in the college newspaper office. He was loved by Baltimore.
I often talked about his kindness and how considerate he was. He will certainly be missed. Rest in Peace my friend.

I worked with Bubba on one of his movies, "Down and Dirty" as a script supervisor. Bubba was so sweet, human, down to earth, and just a joy to be around. He loved to sit and talk to the crew about any subject that came up. I could see he was in physical pain in his knees, most probably from his past career in football, and would often opt to sit instead of stand. In between takes, when he leaned against the set car to rest his legs for a moment, the entire car moved under his weight. I was so amazed at his size (I am only 5'2") and strength, yet he was so sweet, kind and gentle. I would have loved to have wrapped him up and taken him home. My husband surely would not have minded since he was an enormous Bubba fan himself. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, fans and all who knew or wished to know this gentle giant. Rest in Peace, Bubba. You deserve it.

I went to junior high with Bubba Smith and his mother was one of my teachers. I will always remember how Bubba towered over the rest of the students at Dunbar in Beaumont, TX. He was a nice kid then and seemed to have been a wonderful grown up. He will be greatly missed. Dr. Virginia Holmes Cook (Kansas City, KS)

August 12, 2011

My name is Everette W. Adams III, Dad Everette W. Adams Sr. (Deceased) and Mother Charlene Adams. Bubba was an inspiration to me all through my life. As a child, born in Beaumont, I could not wait to see him on the practice field. The Bulldogs always had C.P. in the news. He would always take the time to let my friends know he knew me.In 1963 I was a the CP Bulldogs' Child team mascot. After school on occasions, Bubba would babysit me and my sisters Emma & Cynthia while he did his homework. I was only six years of age and my friend use to stare at Bubba through our windows and wait for him to finish babysitting, just so they could get to walk across the football field with him as he went home. My Dad and Mom worked as head custodians at Charlton-Pollard HS. I had many that made sure I stayed out of trouble. Like Couch Smith, Coach Randall, plus each of the smith brothers Lawrence and Willie-Ray. I don’t have to tell you that this was in the day that you could get a spanking from those that knew your parents and sometimes those that didn’t.
I last spoke with Bubba about 6 months ago by phone; he was giving me advice (as he always have done) on how best to help my Nephew with his football career. I and all of my family will miss him. What a grand meeting must be taking place in heaven among those that we knew from the past. My father and Bubba’s father probably made sure his rooms were ready for him. It would have to be rooms with high sealings because Bubba's spirit was and always will be much larger than his physical statue.

I was shocked when I heard of the passing of my beloved friend. I had the distinct pleasure of representing Bubba in the purchase of his home on Sunlight Pl.in L.A.where we shared several great memories, especially the weekend vollyball games on the sandy beach in Santa Monica,Ca. Bubba would select his team mostly of females because he said he did not need any wimpy men on his team, he could wup up on us with the girls, and he did..He was an awesome competor on and off the field,he possessed an awesome presence, very kind and truely a gentle giant. Love You Man, may God bless you and rest in Peace.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
