Fayard Nicholas Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 25, 2006.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Fayard Nicholas, who with his brother Harold wowed the tap dancing world with their astonishing athleticism and inspired generations of dancers, from Fred Astaire to Savion Glover, has died. He was 91.

Nicholas died Tuesday at his home from pneumonia and other complications of a stroke, his son Tony Nicholas said.

"My dad put Heaven on hold and now they can begin the show," the younger Nicholas said Wednesday.

The Nicholas brothers were still boys when they were featured at New York's Cotton Club in 1932. Though young, they were billed as "The Show Stoppers!" And despite the racial hurdles facing black performers, they went on to Broadway, then Hollywood.

Astaire once told the brothers that the acrobatic elegance and synchronicity of their "Jumpin' Jive" dance sequence in "Stormy Weather" (1943) made it the greatest movie musical number he had ever seen. In the number from the all-black musical starring Lena Horne and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson , the brothers tap across music stands in an orchestra with the fearless exuberance of children stone-hopping across a pond. In the finale, they leap-frog seamlessly down a sweeping staircase, performing incredible splits.

The two were vaudeville brats who toured with their musician parents, Fayard stealing dance steps as they went along and teaching them to his brother, who was seven years younger.

"We were tap-dancers, but we put more style into it, more bodywork, instead of just footwork," Harold Nicholas recalled in a 1987 interview.

Harold, who died in 2000, once said of his older brother's dancing, "He was like a poet ... talking to you with his hands and feet."

Their dancing betrayed not only creative genius but the athletic marvel of what no one else would dare attempt.

Their trademark no-hands splits - in which they not only went down but sprang back up again without using their hands for balance - left film audiences wide-eyed. The legendary choreographer George Balanchine called it ballet, despite their lack of formal training.

"My brother and I used our whole bodies, our hands, our personalities and everything," Fayard Nicholas said in an interview last year. "We tried to make it classic. We called our type of dancing classical tap and we just hoped the audience liked it."

The great dancer and actor Gregory Hines, who died in 2003 at age 57, once said that if a film were ever made about their lives, the dance numbers would have to be computer-generated because nobody could duplicate them.

Fayard, born in 1914, and Harold, born in 1921, learned to dance watching vaudeville shows while their parents played in the pit orchestra.

"One day at the Standard Theater in Philadelphia, I looked onstage and I thought, 'They're having fun up there; I'd like to do something like that'," Fayard recalled in a 1999 interview.

"We worked up an act called 'The Nicholas Kids,' and did it in the living room. Our father said: 'When you're dancing, don't look at your feet, look at the audience. You're not entertaining yourself, you're entertaining the audience."'

The brothers were good enough by 1928 to debut in vaudeville. In 1932 they made their film debut in the short "Pie Pie Blackbird," and were booked at New York's famed Cotton Club, which became their base. They were allowed to mingle with the white celebrity patrons before going home to bed at 5 or 6 a.m. They would sleep until 3 p.m., when their daily tutoring began, then return to the club by chauffeur-driven limousine for the first show at midnight. Fayard was 18, Harold 11.

Movie mogul Samuel Goldwyn spotted them at the club and cast them in the Eddie Cantor musical "Kid Millions" (1934).

Their polished urbanity and classic good looks made them film stars despite the celluloid segregation that relegated them to non-speaking parts and dance sequences that could be easily cut for racially squeamish audiences in the South. Their dance routines were featured in such movies as "Down Argentine Way" (1940), "Tin Pan Alley" (1940) and "Sun Valley Serenade" (1941).

They finally danced with a white star, Gene Kelly, in their last film together, "The Pirate" in 1948.

"If you were black, you experienced (prejudice)," Harold Nicholas once said. "It wasn't a real horrible thing for us; we went through it."

In later years, Harold did solo work in Europe, then returned to Broadway in "The Tap Dance Kid" and "Sophisticated Ladies" and to film in "Uptown Saturday Night" (1974). Fayard won a Tony award in 1989 for his choreography of "Black and Blue," and the brothers were awarded Kennedy Center Honors in 1991.

The two remained close throughout their lives, despite their different personalities. Fayard was known as the more outgoing of the two, the one whose optimism kept the act afloat. Harold was more withdrawn and introspective.

Both brothers had tumultuous personal lives. Harold admitted that his first marriage, to famed actress Dorothy Dandridge, collapsed because of his relentless womanizing. Dandridge, the first black woman nominated for a best-actress Oscar, died of a drug overdose in 1965 at 42.

In an interview for A & E's Biography in 1999, Fayard said wistfully, "I tried to be a good husband and father. ... I don't know what happened."

But he remained on good terms with his first wife, Geraldine, and by all accounts, had a long and happy marriage to his second wife, the late Barbara January. He married dancer Katherine Hopkins in 2000. Up until his stroke, he continued to tap dance and speak at dance festivals around the world. His two granddaughters, calling themselves the Nicholas Sisters, would perform his old steps.

In addition to his son Tony, and his wife, Katherine Hopkins-Nicholas, he is survived by another son, Paul, of Los Angeles; a sister Dorothy Nicholas Morrow of Los Angeles; four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

I met Fayard, who was a Baha'i, in Los Angeles at an event my Father (Character actor Patrick Sullivan Burke...born Merrill LEVINE) organized at the Motion Picture Country Home. That was about 1981-3. I was also a member of the same Baha'i Faith.

To The Nicholas Family:
I have been a fan of Fayard Nicholas and his brother Harold for many years. I am saddened by his passing. My favorite performance was in an old movie with Harold and Nina Mae McKinney, entitled "Pie, Pie Blackbird." Rest in Peace Fayard Nicholas. May the Lord be with you and your family.

For Fayard...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

"Fayard & Harold Nicholas" Names that are known and faces that we will always remember. They enjoyed what they did and they lived a good life. God needed to hear and see for himself the talent that they had, and Fayard was needed for his act. Two brothers with that much talent, and ambition lives forever, but we'll always feel an empty space in our hearts, But when we do feel sorrow, just turn on one of their performances of: Cab Calloway- Jumpin Jive or Dorothy Dandridge- Chattanooga Choo Choo, and see those brothers tap away. And that will cheer our mourning hearts. Fayard & Harold Nicholas will most definitly be missed. My heart and prays go out to their family and friends. But I know that they are in a happier and free place where they can tap anywhere they want. My name is Shvon Clifton and I'm 15 years old, and those two brothers are inspirations to my life. I love them dearly. They bodies are at rest, but their spirits tap on in heaven. Reunited again they are happy and we should be too, to know that their work on earth is completed, but they have a whole other page to do on the other side. I love you Fayard & Harold, but God loves you more. Rest In peace, and if we all walk in the path of God, then we all will be reunited at the gates heaven. I'll be seeing you. ~1~

May God bless Harold and Fayard Nicholas. These guys were true originals and we may never see the likes of them again. I was blessed to take a master tap class with Fayard in the summer of 2005,shortly before his passing and I will never forget his wonderful spirit and dance knowledge. Tap is heaven and now heaven will be filled with the wonderful sounds of the Nicholas brothers.

I've always admired the Nicholas Brothers for their talents in visual and performing arts, courage for dealing with the racism of the time, and their classy and charming manners.

Harold's appearance in the Robert Townsend film classic "The Five Heartbeats", is still a thrill to see. Since Fayard's passing I've been totally obsessed with finding visual arts footage of these guys, such as "Stormy Weather", "We Sing, We Dance", their 1992 PBS documentary, and "Orchestra Wives." I feel it's my duty and honor to show these films to people, especially the younger generation so that their incredible legacy will not be forgotten.

R.I.P. Fayard! Now you and Harold can show them how it's done in Heaven.

In 1977, fresh out of art school in Pittsburgh, and some tap basics under my belt, I moved to Los Angeles. While there I was told of a Eugene Jackson, a tap dancer that had a dance studio in Compton, CA. I contacted Mr. Jackson and became a regular at his studio for more tap training on Saturdays. Mr. Jackson was a true performer. A song and dance man, musician, actor, comedian . . . you name it, he did it! As a child, he was one of the originals in the "Our Gang" silent comedies, named "Pineapple", and played various bit roles in films from the 1920's until he passed in 2001. One particular day, Mr. Jackson called to say he would be headed up to San Francisco for the next three weeks, to do a movie. Oh how I sad I became, because I couldn't imagine not going to the studio for that long of a period. So he told me he had a friend he would call to see if he would continue with my tap dance instruction. Unbeknownst to me at the time, that friend turned out to be Mr. Fayard Nicholas himself. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The master himself would be teaching me? . . . no way! So for the next 7 months, I received tap instruction from Fayard Nicholas. Those were some of the happiest days of my life. Seeing Fayard and Mr. Jackson singing and cajoling at the piano and having a good ole time. From that moment, an everlasting friendship was made. So to Fayard Nicholas I say, I love you, and appreciate all that you have shared with me through the years. I will miss your presence on this planet. But you have left a great legacy. You truly changed my life by showing me the meaning of LIFE and JOY, disguised as a dance. I wonder what you and Harold are up to to next!
