Kitty Hart Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 18, 2007.
NEW YORK (AP) - Kitty Carlisle Hart, whose long career spanned Broadway, opera, television and film, including the classic Marx Brothers movie "A Night at the Opera," has died at age 96, her son said Wednesday.

Christopher Hart said his mother had been in and out of the hospital since contracting pneumonia over the Christmas holidays.

"She passed away peacefully" at home, said Hart. "She had such a wonderful life, and a great long run, it was a blessing."

Hart had appeared for years on the popular game show "To Tell the Truth" as a celebrity panelist.

The entertainer was also a tireless advocate for the arts, serving 20 years on the New York State Council on the Arts. In 1991, she received the National Medal of Arts from the President George H.W. Bush.

Well known for her starring role as Rosa Castaldi in the 1935 movie "A Night at the Opera," her other film credits included: "She Loves Me Not" and "Here Is My Heart," both opposite Bing Crosby; Woody Allen's "Radio Days"; and "Six Degrees of Separation."

She began her acting career on Broadway in "Champagne Sec," and went on to appear in many other Broadway productions, including the 1984 revival of "On Your Toes."

She made her operatic debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1967 in "Die Fledermaus," and created the role of Lucretia in the American premiere of Benjamin Britten's "Rape of Lucretia."

From 1956 to 1967, she appeared on the CBS prime-time game show "To Tell the Truth" with host Bud Collyer and fellow panelists such as Polly Bergen, Johnny Carson, Bill Cullen and Don Ameche. The show featured three contestants, all claiming to be the same person. The panelists asked them questions to determine which was telling the truth.

Hart's late husband was the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Moss Hart, who wrote "You Can't Take It With You" and "The Man Who Came to Dinner" with George S. Kaufman and won a Tony for directing "My Fair Lady" on Broadway.

Carlisle's film career began in 1934; in "Murder at the Vanities," she sings "Cocktails for Two," a song later made famous in a spoof version by Spike Jones.

"A Night at the Opera" the following year was the Marx Brothers' sixth film and their first for MGM, where they shifted after their career at Paramount sagged at the box office. MGM's Irving Thalberg added more romance to the Marxes' formula, bringing in Carlisle and Allan Jones to play the young opera singers in love, and the film became a huge hit.

Elegant and sophisticated then, and now - with hair, makeup and dress perfectly in place - Hart has been called a "great dame."

In a piece on CBS' "60 Minutes" in 2000, Marie Brenner, author of "Great Dames: What I Learned From Older Women," said: "A great dame is a soldier in high heels. ... They lived through the Depression. They lived through the war.

"They were tough, intelligent and brassy women," said Brenner, who described Hart as a great dame who "walks into a room, and the room lights up."

Discipline ruled Hart's success. She began every day with an exercise routine, even after she turned 90.

"I can do things a woman a fifth my age can't do. ... I do 40 leg lifts without stopping, And then I take my legs, I put them over my head, and I touch the floor behind me with my toes, and then very slowly I let myself down, touching every vertebra as I go," Hart told "60 Minutes."

Hart was born in New Orleans on Sept. 3, 1910. She attended the Sorbonne, the London School of Economics and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

She and Hart married in 1946 and had a daughter, Catherine, in 1950. Her husband died in 1961 at age 57. In later years, she lived on the next block from Kaufman's daughter, Anne Kaufman Schneider, and the two would confer when a revival of a Kaufman-Hart play was in the offing.

She served on the state arts council from 1971 to 1996, including 20 years as its chairwoman. In 1988, she testified in Albany to a legislative committee amid complaints that the council had funded gay-oriented projects.

"We fund art," she said. "We are neutral as far as anyone else is concerned. We don't fund anyone's point of view."

Hart's special concern for women's role in society led to her appointment as chairwoman of the Statewide Conference of Women and later as special consultant to New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller on women's opportunities. She also moderated a TV series called "Women on the Move."

She served on the board of Empire State College in New York and was an honorary trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art.

Besides Christopher Hart, 59, a director, writer and producer, survivors include her daughter, Dr. Catherine Hart, and three grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete. "We're working on a terrific memorial," said her son.

What a wonderful lady you were!
I was fortunate enough to see your one woman show with my Mother in the summer of 2006, and you were to celebrate your birthday in a few days...your 96th! Thank you for the twenty years of being on the New York State Panel of the Arts and your untiring advocacy for the arts, which are so important to the quality of life!
I am sorry that I didn't attend the reception following your performance and have the opportunity to meet you. It would have been so wonderful to have met you, great lady!

Just watched Kitty Carlyle on BUZZ TV "What's my Line" which brought back so many memories of this elegant, beautiful woman. We watched every week when I was young in MI. She was so inspirational and therefore I am watching her now many years after the TV show has ended. We need more women like her in this day and age. Thank you Ms. Carlyle for being a trendsetter.

I stumbled upon the Original 'To Tell the Truth" and seeing Ms. Carlisle brought back so many wonderful memories.

I was 5 in 1962 and my family did not have much. An elegance she possessed made such an impression on me. But most of her her intelligence. I will never forget an Episode where she she declared, "I am a feminist".

It seems fitting in this Historical Election to say a few words. I am sure Ms. Carlisle would be proud.

My late father told me many years ago as we watched "To Tell the Truth" that there were only two women in the world that I could always depend upon to be kind, intelligent, and well-dressed ladies under any circumstances: my own (now also late) mother and Miss Kitty Carlisle. Oh, how the world now needs your wit, grace, humor, charm, and style even more than ever before, Miss Carlisle. Nearly seven years ago now, as I drove through a late night from Virginia to the bedside of my dying mother in Raleigh, North Carolina, I discovered that my wife had placed on the car seat next to me a tape you had made of songs and memories from your long career. Somehow as I listened to your voice, I realized that the two women my father had once wisely told me I could always depend upon would always remain in my own memories just as he had said to me: true ladies in every sense of the word. Bless you for the wise lessons you gave to all of us in grace, good humor, and public service. I so hope my parents have now had the chance to meet you in spirit.

For Kitty...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Kitty, you brought so many of us great joy for so long that a simple "thank you" is totally unacceptable. Your grace and elegance, that wonderful and heartfelt laugh, those eyes that twinkled, the perfect diction and demeanor, and those beautiful clothes worn so perfectly, they're all wonderful images that you gave us so freely. From the time I was a very young child in the late 1950s, you made me stop and look, listen intently, and want to be a small part of your world; it was an elegant, dignified world, and our more ordinary world seemed so much more special because you were around. About three years ago, you were kind enough to send me a recent photograph with a lovely autographed note, something I will always cherish. And when I saw your beautiful Verona apartment in pictures, I thought, yes, this IS Kitty--it looks exactly like you: the concert grand and your music stand beside it, where you practiced vocal exercises and songs, the Meissen pieces, and the light blue rugs over elegant wood floors, it's all you. I know that Heaven has been made more special by your presence, and in a very important way, I'm touched by the fact that, on the very day my beloved mom died, you died as well, so obviously, Heaven had two new and wonderful angels that day. Dear Kitty, may God smile on you as you smiled on so many of us for so long. Your run was truly remarkable, and now, you will join Moss and brighten Heaven with that smile, wit, elegance, charm, and laugh. Deep, heartfelt condolences to Chris and Catherine; and to you, Kitty, thank you for being a one-in-a-million class act, for that's what you were and always will be in my heart.

Loved to watch Kitty Carlisle. Miss Carlisle was a beautiful, talented, and very witty woman. She could hold her own with other panelists on the show.

I was so delighted to see, a few years ago, that she was still working at her profession. The subject of the show was women in their eighties that were still working. The catch was that Miss Carlisle was past eighty and going strong.

Kitty Carlisle was a true Class Act.

Dearest Kitty: You inspired the many of us whom grew up watching you appear on TV on To Tell The Truth And What's My Line. You graced ALL of us,whom found you to be captivating, engaging, warm, sincere and exceptionally well dressed.Your manners were impeccable.I got to see you appear in Tampa,Florida a couple years ago,and have a personalized photo taken with friends Laurence Bains and J.Scott Perry.I hope you felt that we all aspired to be as wonderful as you in compassion, and be a model citizen for others to follow by example.May you rest in Peace, until we can see you trailing in chiffon again.

I was a dear friend of Kity's since 1996...I've been to her elegant NYC apartment many times and spoke to her on the telephone every two weeks, faithfully...Even though I was not a 'celebrity", she always took my calls and we talked and laughed for quite a time on the telephone...Above all else, Kitty loved those that made her laugh...She very much enjoyed strolling through Central Park in NYC and meeting her fans...She made all who crossed her path feel as though they were the most important person in her life at that moment, and gave you her undivided attention, often asking questions that proved that she was, indeed, listening to each word you uttered...The world has lost a large degree of class and sophistication with her passing...Kitty was, indeed, one of a kind...A 'blue blood' who loved and respected all of us and never felt that she was better than anyone else...She devoted her life to the Arts...Kitty was Chairman of the NYS Council on the Arts from 1976-1996, and accepted not a penny as a salary for all of those 20 years of service...Such was her dedication to the Arts...I once asked her what her favorite time in life was and she answered immediately and with an engaging smile, "Right Now"...May she rest in eternal peace, knowing that she will live on forever in the hearts and minds of those whose lives she touched so deeply and gracefully...How I wish she had not perfomed in Atlanta in November when she had already been diagnosed with pneumonia, just to prove her edict that, despite one's health, "The Show Must Go On"...It turned out to debilitate her greatly, despite the joy she felt in being able to perform there... Rest in peace, dear Kitty...And my condolences to your family and friends that have been your "rock" for all these many years...

Christopher,
Please accept my condolences on your Mother's passing. I will always remember chatting with her on the phone from our Matthews North dorm room in "The Yard" in 1967. I'm still amazed at her kindness and special charm in bridging the large generation gap that existed between 1960's teenagers and over-40's.
All the best to you and your Mother's family and loved ones.

My Dear Mrs. Hart,
How badly I shall miss you- our yearly talks, your always elegantly written letters and choosing Flowers for that years Birthday. From age 12 to 49 [There, I've said it, I am 49]while I will never wear my own age as proudly as you did yours... I can at least begin to say it, when asked. For all those years though you were my friend and that meant so very much. I Pray you found Mr. Hart right away... the things the Two of you may discuss for years to come will undoubatably please both of you. Just as you were [without a doubt] the LAST of the Great Hollywood Class Acts to Grace our path... I expect you will only add to the Beauty in your new Home. Perhaps you'll say Hello and send my Love to Miss. Booth [up there] ... as for me, I shall never forget all you added to this Southern Boys life... long ago. With Love... I have forwarded my own Tribute to your Daughter and Son at the East 64TH Street Home... it will never be Really Empty... nor will the Hearts of those who knew you. Goodbye for a brief time Fair Lady... with Love and Respect,
Kevin [Your, Dear. Mr. Minton] XO

This lovely lady reminded me so much of my mother and aunts: she was truly an ageless beauty. I remember her on television wearing a diamond heart necklace, and I thought she was so elegant, with her perfectly coiffed dark hair, flawless make-up and beautiful dresses. She always looked as though she was going to the opera. The present world of flip-flops and blue jeans should take a leaf out of her book. I will miss her. May she rest in peace.

Dear Family of Kitty Carlisle,
Friends and I just watched an old "What's My Line" in which her son, Chris, was a guest in disguise. Kitty, that night, was dressed in the most gorgeous red gown, and although she was well into her sixties at that point, she looked absolutely fabulous. How she laughed when she realized she had been fooled by her own son. I admired her gracious, positive spirit so much. She will be deeply missed. My sincerest condolences go to her family.

Sincerely,

Sandra Merrifield

When I was teaching school in the South Bronx, Kitty Carlisle Hart came into my classroom to observe what we were doing in our school. It was a school that used art and music to teach literacy skills. She came to my class on a rainy Monday morning and walked up three flights of stairs. She was about 78 years old at the time. She wanted our school to receive arts funding. Mrs. Carlisle Hart was totally committed to children and to the arts community. My condolences to her family. Her death is a loss for America! May she rest in eternal peace.

Although I did not know Kitty, she was an American icon. I was very little when she was on "To Tell the Truth" and I also continued to follow her later works. I loved to watch her perform. She was a true Lady in every sense of the word. America has lost someone to be proud of. My respects to the family and sympathy at a time such as this. I know you will miss her since she was so active and I am sure she loved you all very much.

Kitty Carlisle was a class act in every way. A rare find in show business. I have so enjoyed watching her over the years. She came from an era where there was a definite formality and morality to television that is tragically nowhere to be found in the modern era. She will be sorely missed. God bless her family and friends at this time of sorrow.

Condolences from Dallas - Kitty was the quintessential lady of class and intelligence. How rare they are today in show business.

The many nights my family watched her wit in the 1960s are precious to me.

Kitty Carlisle Hart was a real treasure. I grew up watching her on To Tell The Truth. She was so elegant, articulate and downright humourous. I loved her sense of fun. She is certainly a model for all of us to emulate.

I am 51, but I remember my mother loving Kitty and to Tell The Truth. It is certainly correct that she is a lady of distinction, grace, and sophistication. I remember the "Truth" show, as well, since my mother was a fan of the show, and especially enjoyed Kitty's classy sense of humor. I am so glad she had such a long, healthy, and meaningful life. May God bless the family, and know that Kitty is in a glorious place.

I remember watching her throughout her long and joyful entertainment career when I was a child until she did her last show.
A wonderful person, delightful entertainer and always with style, class and grace!
She will be one of Heaven's most elegant angels!

My condolences to the family of Ms. Hart. I remember her on "To Tell The Truth", when the guest was a heavyweight fighter. Kitty didn't believe him because she had never heard of the "Louis Schmelling" fight that he talked about. She thought it was one person, when it was two people. She was amazed when the audience laughed at her flub. I will always remember that incident. She kept her dignity and proved she was a true lady. (Who wasn't familiar with heavyweight fighters!) Just recently I read her autobiography. Inspiring. I will miss her.

What can I say that has not been said in this "memory" book?.......and expressed so eloquently by all! All I can say, is "Ditto" - my sentiments, exactly. As a child of the 40s and 50s (I am 63), she brings back thoughts of class, sophistication and education! You will be missed.
