Dr. A. Stanley Dreyfus

A. Dreyfus Obituary

DREYFUS--Dr. A. Stanley, Rabbi Emeritus. It is with the most profound sadness that Union Temple of Brooklyn records the death of its beloved and esteemed Rabbi Emeritus, Dr. A. Stanley Dreyfus, on Tuesday, July 8. He was one of the brightest luminaries of the American Reform Rabbinate, and was lovingly embraced by one and all in our congregational family. As Rabbi from 1964-1979, and then as Rabbi Emeritus until his death, he served our congregation with complete devotion and love, the highest standards of scholarship and spiritual guidance, and inimitable wit and good humor. He had a deep reverence for history, as he himself helped to shape Jewish history over the past half-century. Through his teaching at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, he helped to raise up an entire generation of rabbis. His formidable intellect and scholarly achievements were recognized and honored by colleagues, students, congregants, and all who crossed his path. Along with the entire Reform Movement of Judaism, our congregation has prayed for the past three decades from the prayer books he edited as Chairman of the Liturgy Committee of the Central Conference of American Rabbis. His love for Judaism and the Jewish People knew no bounds. Our hearts go out to his beloved wife Marianne, "M'love," as he called her, and their wonderful family: son Dr. James Dreyfus and daughter-in-law Rabbi Ellen Weinberg Dreyfus of Homewood, IL, and their children, Ben, David, and Lina and Adam Wallace; daughter-in-law Helen Bagot Dreyfus of Houston, TX, widow of Richard, z"I, and her children Daniel and Adam; and sister Julie Zager. Funeral services will be conducted at Union Temple of Brooklyn, 17 Eastern Parkway at Grand Army Plaza, Thursday, July 10, 1:00pm. Y'hi zichrono fv'rachah -May he always be remembered for honor and blessing in the Household of Israel. Dr. Linda Henry Goodman, Rabbi Doris Klueger, President

Having Stanley in our lives while he was our Rabbi at Temple B'nai Israel was a true joy. He and Marianne were dear and wonderful to all of us and we are all better for having known them. Our condolences to Marianne and the family.

Rabbi Dreyfus, the epitome of the rabbinate. Although we hadn't seen one another for decades, I will always remember him as the man who led me on my return to Judaism. He will be deeply missed.

Twice last year Rabbi and Mrs. Dreyfus hosted me at the same Brooklyn apartment where they hosted my mother forty years ago. They treated me like a long lost grandson. Rabbi Dreyfus was a rare human being, tremendous as a scholar, a leader, and a family man. I miss him deeply. My sincere condolences to his wonderful family.
