Harold Leviton Obituary

LEVITON--Harold, an Electrical industry icon, whose products are in nearly all of American homes, died peacefully September 8th, at age ninety. Despite the prominence of his company, Harold maintained a low profile, cherishing his family and long-term relationships with employees, customers and vendors. As CEO and Chairman of the Leviton Manufacturing Co., Inc. of Little Neck, New York, he transformed the company founded by his father in 1906 as a manufacturer of tip mantles for gas lights into a global electrical and electronic industry leader. The company is a rarity in today's environment -a large successful family-owned business. Born in Brooklyn, Harold Leviton was the son of immigrants. From the time he could walk, Harold spent weekends accompanying his father at the company's original factory in Greenpoint. There he built a strong foundation for a career spanning more than seven decades. After graduating from the University of Miami, Harold began his career in the company's purchasing department. Next he was charged with running the personnel department. This position imbued a deep respect for the value of all employees. Upon the death of his father in 1965, Harold became President and CEO of the company. He became Chairman in 1998 after the death of his brotherin-law, Jack Amsterdam. For Harold, his company's mission went beyond selling products. Quality and safety were paramount. He was an advocate in support of electrical industry standards and played a leadership role within the industry serving on the board of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) since 1976. He was Chairman of National Electrical Manufacturers Association Wiring Device Section and an honorary member of its Board of Governors as well as Chairman of the Electrical Manufacturing Council. He was a charter board member of the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFi) and served as a Vice Chairman Emeritus of the National Electrical Safety Foundation (NESF).The human side of the business always came first. Many employee and industry associates could count on a personally signed birthday note or the even more thoughtful gift of a handmade latch hook pillow or cork tray, two of his signature hobbies. There was always more than business to be done. Active with the United Jewish Y's of Long Island, he was a benefactor and onetime president and chairman of its Board. He was a founder of Israel's Technion, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (now Montefiore Medical Center) and the Leviton Industrial Arts Award, a prestigious accolade for New York City High School students in the electrical trades. He served as a Trustee and Deputy Mayor of the Village of Hewlett Harbor where he lived since 1947, Vice President of the Board of the Woodmere Academy, and Chairman of the Appeals Board and Vice Chairman of the Recreational Committee of the Five Towns. Leviton was the recipient of numerous distinguished service awards. These included the Anti-Defamation Torch of Liberty Award, the Wire and Cable Club of America's Charles D. Scott Distinguished Career Award, the Medal of Merit of the Portuguese Communities, which he received from the Government of Portugal, and the NEMA Falk Award for his many years of service to the electroindustry. Harold Leviton will be remembered as an icon in the electrical industry, and entrepreneur and visionary, generous benefactor, but most of all, as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife Shirley, daughters, Patricia, Adrienne, and Elizabeth, sons-in-law Stephen, Donald and Andrew, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Family requests no flowers. Donations may be made to UJA Federation or the North Shore University Hospital. Services Monday 1:30pm, Temple Israel of Lawrence, 140 Central Avenue, Lawrence, NY. My deepest condolences to the Leviton Family. I will miss my chats with HL about the economy and how he moved our electrical products from the basement to the street level at Woolworth Stores. HL is a titan of industry that will never be replaced. I will forever be thankful for the opportunity he has provided me and my family.

Dear Mrs. Leviton and Family,

We would like to express our sincere condolences to you on the death of Mr. Harold Leviton. He was a vital and wonderful man who enjoyed his work, family and his hobbies.

Both of us had a chance to meet with Mr. Leviton during his annual visits to Gardena where we worked for Pacific Electricord. Later, in Little Neck, I met Mr. Leviton when he, like a doctor in a hospital, was making his rounds and quite often would stopped in AFCI testing area asking questions about these new products. He had a good sense of humor and demonstrated it in the conversation we had on the evening of September 11, 2001 when he found me and my partner, Nick DiSalvo, still conducting tests after most people left the premises.

We hope that you will be able to overcome this sad experience in some way or the other, but the memory of Harold Leviton will be passed through generations of new members of Leviton family and all current and former employees.

HL with the Delta Sales Group of Michigan, Al, Sonny, ED and Ken, at the national sales meeting.

My best memories of Mr. Leviton were the speeches he gave in the Test Lab at the patent award ceremonies. He praised us and made us feel like part of a large family. We worked harder because we knew he appreciated our efforts.

On several occasions, he stopped by my office and asked “what are you writing?” I would explain.
He always remembered me and asked “how’s your brother doing at Eagle?”

Everyone agrees he was the nicest person . I will always keep the pillow he made for me.
We all miss him.

Dear Mrs. Leviton and family,

Please accept my deepest condolences for the loss of your husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. I know that his family gave him tremendous joy. This was something he spoke of many times and I fondly recall him stating that during his receipt of the prestigious Bernard Faulk award.

I was blessed with having worked for him for many years and traveled with him numerous times. Wherever we went you can see the positive impact he had on people and his presence brightened their lives. Never have I seen one person give so much of himself to so many and for that we are all fortunate for having been acquainted with this remarkable and kind man.

While in your time of sadness, please take comfort in knowing that he led an extraordinary life and had a positive impact on everyone and everything he encountered. Cleary he made a difference. My deepest sympathy goes out to all of you.

I wanted to express my sincere sympathy for the family of such a great man. It is because of his legacy that I have been with this company, his family owned business has helped me and my family for over eight years. He has left a mark on all of us, even if we never met him, we were very proud to be Leviton employees as a result of him. God Bless you and yours...

Dearest Shirley, Patty, Adee and Lizzie,
Words seem inadequate at a time like this. As you can tell from the messages that have already been posted your Husband/Dad was admired, loved and respected by all those who knew him.
He was always kind and generous to us throughout the 21 years we were associated with your Great Company. With many fond memories, kindest thoughts and deepest sympathy,

To the Leviton Family,

My deepest and sincerest condolences for your loss.

I hope that these words console you and bring you a little joy from people whom Mr Leviton inspired.

I worked in the Little Neck facility, in the Test Lab, and fondly recall Mr Leviton often passing through to see what was new. It was nice to see the owner of such a large business take an interest in what a young engineer was doing.

I will always have good things to say about him and his products.

Mr. Leviton has created an environment that recognizes and rewards creativity, initiative and dedication, and respects diversity and dignity.

The culture created by HL grants you chances to develop your skills further your career and achieve your goals. That way "when you grow in your job, we grow together as a company" he would often say.

I am eternally grateful for the chance to have worked with the Leviton Company for nearly 30 years.

I am an honored recipient of the famous “latch hook pillows and cork trays” and a watch to boot. I shall cherish them forever.

His passing is truly the end of an era; he will be missed by all his employees (past/present) and the industry.

Mrs. Leviton, I am wishing you and your family warmth and comfort in this time of loss.

My condolences to Mrs. Leviton and the Leviton Family,
I consider myself fortunate indeed for having had the privilege of working for Leviton from 1969 to 1972 under the leadership of Mr. Harold Leviton. It was my first job here in US and after 35 years I still remember Mr. Leviton delivering bonus checks and personally speaking to each and every employee at the Greenpoint offices and plant in Brooklyn. I just retired from Hubbell after serving the wiring device industry for 38 years. During this time I had several opportunities to meet Mr. Leviton at NEMA meetings and enjoy his sense of hummer. I carry on his memory like many other people whose life he touched.

I was quite sad when I learned of Harold's passing. I first met Harold when I was a little girl when I visited Leviton Mfg. Co. with my Dad. He was always kind, warm, and interested in learning more about me and my life--right up until the last time I saw Harold in Ft. Lauderdale when he came to hear our son Jason play the piano at my parents' home. All of us are grateful to Harold and the entire Leviton family for embracing and enabling my Dad and his professional aspirations. I am sending much love to Shirley and all of your children in this time of sorrow. Please know that Peter, Jason and I are with you in spirit. Love, Kathy

There is nothing to you that I can say
There is nothing for you that I can do
There is no possible way for me to fully understand
What at this time you are going through

The feelings that I have deep inside of me
Are but mine to feel for myself alone
As are the feelings of others and yours and you
These are theirs and of you your own

When in times we loose our loved ones
It feels as if a part of us has gone
But it is only with their strength and memories
That we will be able to continue on

Those that are gone are never forgotten
As we remain to fight with our pain
We must never give in no matter or whatever we feel
Or their lives would have been in vain

Time will pass and wounds will heal
To often think of them and still
Our grief will eventually turn back to happiness
But remember them we always will

Dear Shirley and family:

I am saddened to learn of Harold's passing, and send heartfelt condolences to you. I met Harold years ago, as Harvey and Elly Kram's new son-in-law, and I always looked forward to seeing him and Shirley when arrangements brought us together. Two occasions stand out: Kathy and I were honored to have had the Levitons at our wedding in 1981, and we recall fondly driving them up Sunset Blvd. in LA for Brent Kram's bar mitzvah party.

Harold was always an impressive, kind, gracious and interesting man, and I am very happy to have known him.

From the many stories I heard from my late father (Mike Draga, 56 years with Leviton) to the experience I had working at Corporate Headquarters, Mr. Leviton was always approachable, friendly and passionate about his company. One of my father's most prized possessions was the first socket he ever made. Whenever Mr. Leviton would see him, he would always ask him if he still had it. The business world has lost a respectable colleague and the Leviton family has lost a very special person. My deepest sympathy to Mrs. Leviton and family. Dear Mrs. Leviton & Family,

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Leviton. He was a truly great man who treated & cared for every employee of Leviton as an extended member of his own family. Bottom-line, he had a big heart & wonderful soul and will be truly missed.

I have many memories of HL that make me smile. When he realized that I collected snow-globes, he would always pick one up for me during his travels. I can't tell you how it felt to know that the President & owner of such a major company took the time to think of me in an airport and buy me a snow globe from his travels. I still have many of them.

It was an honor and a pleasure to have worked for Mr. Leviton for 18 years. Please know my thoughts are with the Leviton family at this time. Mr. Leviton will surely live on in our own collective memories.

To the Leviton family, I extend my deepest sympathy. Harold was admired and respected by so many people. I had the opportunity to travel with HL and see first hand the admiration people had for him. He was a respected man with a compasionate heart. He will be missed.

HL was a special man-they don't make them like him anymore. A true visionary and inspriation to all who knew him, personally or professionally. HL always had a smile and a hello for you and truly cared about his Leviton family. He cared for his own family and gave back generously to many communities. He will be truly missed.

Harold's passing marks a sad day not only for his immediate family and loved ones but also for his extended family, the Leviton employees. He was a great man, a man that achieved much and a mentor to all. We mourn his loss and rejoyce his unending legacy.

Mr. Leviton always kept a genuine, personal connection with his employees, including the ones who worked long-distance, and we always felt like family on account of it. He was truly one-of-a-kind and an absolute "class act!" I am grateful for the chance to have worked with an industry legend-- a title he truly deserves.
