Dorothy Kimball Obituary

KIMBALL--Dorothy Fisher. A longtime resident of Greenwich Village in NYC and Southold, LI died on Tuesday, October 16 after a long illness. She was 82. Daughter of Harold John Fisher and Florence Lutton Fisher, she was raised in Port Washington, NY, attended the experimental Manhasset Bay School, and graduated from Radcliffe College in 1947. She was a loyal and generous alumna for the rest of her life, serving as director of the Radcliffe Club and as a member, and eventually a chairman, of the Harvard Schools Committee. Her lifelong work as an educator included being a co-founder and director of the West Village Co-operative Nursery School, teaching Latin at St. Luke's School and the Village Community School, serving as the director of the Independent Schools' Chairmen Association, and offering advice and opinions on schools and schooling to all who sought them. She was also the former executive secretary of Huguenot Society of America and, up until her death, the executive secretary of the Waltz Society of New York, an organization that combined her appreciation of music and culture with her tremendous love for New York City. Her other great pleasure was traveling and planning trips with her family. She is survived by her brother, David Fisher; her devoted children, Pamela Kimball Kenney of NYC, William Fisher Kimball of Los Angeles, and Susannah Kimball Rosato of Greenwich, CT; her sons-inlaw, David Kenney and Ernest Rosato Jr.; her daughterin-law, Alexandra Kimball; and her adored grandchildren, Sarah and Alice Kenney, Sophie and Fernanda Kimball, Ernest Rosato III, and William, Colin, Lachlan, and Aengus Rosato. She was predeceased by her former husband and lifelong friend, William Maltby Kimball. All who knew her are invited to a memorial service at the Church of the Ascension at 5th Avenue and 10th Street on Wednesday October 24 at 4pm and to a reception afterwards at the Harvard Club of New York, 27 West 44th Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory either to the East Harlem School, 340 East 104th Street, NY, NY 10029 attention: Grace Eagar; to Friends of Alta, PO BOX 8126, Alta, UT 84092; or to St. Michael's Church, Clark's Town, Trelawny, Jamaica, West Indies. Donations to any of these may also be sent to Pamela Kenney, 30 West 70th Street, Apartment 6A, NY, NY 10023, and will be forwarded. Ave atque vale, Babba.

I was stricken to hear the sad news of losing Dorie. She and I worked together for many years on running the Waltz Series. She was the bulwark of the organization and was its continuity. Without her great energy, knowledge and dedication we could not have carried on with the vitality we have enjoyed. Dorie was a delight to work with, and she became a lovely friend. We also shared being Harvard alumni; the school had been very important to both of us. I love in London now, so regret I am unable to attend the service today. My next visit to New York in November will have a real void in it. My heart goes out to all of Dorie's family.
