ALLWIN--James M. The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Aetos Capital succumbed to cancer on Friday, October 19, at the age of 54, in Greenwich. He is survived by his wife and his three children. Jim was born on January 13, 1953, in Germany. He received his BA degree from Yale University in 1974. In 1976, he received his MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College, where he later served as a member of the Board of Overseers, and founded the school's Initiative on Corporate Citizenship and Ethics. In 1999, Jim founded Aetos Capital, an investment management firm, whose clients have grown to include a number of the world's most sophisticated pension funds, endowments, foundations, and governmental entities, as well as a small set of significant private investors. In 2005, Mr. Allwin became the CEO of AEA Holdings, an entity created from the combination of Aetos Capital and AEA Investors. Prior to founding Aetos Capital, Mr. Allwin was head of the Investment Management businesses of Morgan Stanley, including Morgan Stanley Asset Management, Miller Anderson & Sherrerd and the firm's Private Equity and Real Estate Funds. Over the course of his 23-year career at Morgan Stanley, Mr. Allwin also worked in areas such as Corporate Finance and Mergers and Acquisitions, and served as a member of the Morgan Stanley Management Committee. In addition to his dedicated work in the business sector, Mr. Allwin made important contributions in the areas of education, health care and the arts. For 28 years he has been a Board member of Communities in Schools, the nation's largest stay-in-school program, acting as Chairman for 11 of those years. He also has been serving on the Boards of America's Promise--The Alliance for Youth and the National Mentoring Partnership, as well as the Board of Overseers at the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth. He previously chaired the Board of Trustees of Greenwich Academy and was a member of the Investment Committee of Yale University. In the area of healthcare, Jim has been actively involved as a Board member of the YaleNew Haven Hospital System, and served as a member of the Howard Hughes Medical Institutes Investment Committee. Jim's interest in modern art led him to serve as a Trustee of both the Dia Art Foundation and the American Patrons of Tate. Jim will be waked on Wednesday, October 24, from 4:00pm--8:00pm at Leo P. Gallagher & Sons, located at 31 Arch Street in Greenwich, Connecticut. To the Allwin Family - Believe it or not, it is December 2009, and I just learned of Jim's passing through my friend, Kathleen. Please accept my most deepest and heartfelt condolences. I worked as an Admin. Asst. at Morgan Stanley for 10 years in the MSAM group under Jim. Jim was more than a wonderful person; he was kind, considerate, caring and treated everyone with courtesy and respect. He was a gentleman, and it was an honor to work with him. Again, please accept my sympathy, and may you find peace and love in the memories you so cherish.

Hiya Sir, I think of you often still. Your absence from this world is surely noticed and awfully missed. There are so many things I learned from you in the short time we had together. You are an extraordinary individual, who gave more to this world than many will ever do. It was my honor and pleasure to have spent the last few years of your life by your side. I am eternally grateful to have met you. Please bring some peace to all of those you loved most. I find it is not so easy to be as strong and as graceful as you remained through "the long fight". Take care.

Mr. Allwin was a great man with a huge heart. I know this for sure, I was his caddy whenever he played at the Golf Club of Purchase. We had really good relationship one I won't forget.

I was deeply saddened by the recent passing of Jim Allwin. I was honored to have taught and coached Jim during his high school days at Walsh Jesuit High School. During that time, I found him to be an intelligent, dedicated, and warm human being. We developed a friendship that last long after he graduated. We can take comfort in the fact that a part of him will continue to live, reflected in the lives of those he touched and guided over the years. He gave of himself, perhaps the greatest gift of all, and those fortuante enough to have known him, will carry his ideals, knowledge, and moral principles into the world, and the world cannot help but be a better place because of it. My deepest condolences to his wife Maria, and children, Christopher, Katrina, and Michael.

I first met Jim when I became his personal trainer at his home in Greenwich. There I was able to see what a great family man he was and how proud he was of his family. Later Jim got involved with our company and we witnessed first hand what made him such a great business success. Jim, your family at Plus One Fitness will miss you dearly and we are all better people for knowing you.

It was an honour to work alongside Jim. He was a person of integrity and one who always believed in human kindness. He was loved, and his Echo will still be within our thoughts, and our hearts. I will miss the sound of your laughter and your humour. To the Allwin family, I am sorry for your loss and hope that the thoughts of the many lives that Jim has touched along the way will bring comfort to your hearts. A life taken too soon from all of us.

I had the pleasure of knowing Jim as his client, his friend and finally as his colleague. He excelled in all three relationships and he will be greatly missed. His outstanding character and leadership is a legacy that will benefit all those who he touched. I am honored to have had the opportunity to share his friendship.

I was in Jim's third grade class at St. Joseph. Little did I know then to what heights he was headed. He skipped fourth grade and continued on to achieve and inspire. He truly lived a great life. God bless Jim and his family.

I was so sad to learn of Jim's passing. I worked with Jim in my early days at Morgan Stanley and marveled at his ability to work with so many types of people. He was a wonderful leader at MS.

My deepest sympathy to the Allwin Family. I worked as an admin at Morgan Stanley when Jim was head of MSAM. Jim acknowledged everyone he passed in the hallways, it did not matter who you were. He always greeted you with a smile and treated you with respect. I also had the pleasure to work at Aetos Capital, the company he founded after leaving Morgan Stanley. That is where I really had a chance to witness the extent of his generosity and humility. He was an amazing person. I had a lot of admiration and respect for him. May you rest in peace, Jim.

Jim Allwin was one of the good guys. I met Jim at Morgan Stanley in 1977 when I joined "the Firm" as an analyst. I smiled when I learned that he was the Chairman of Communities in Schools. I remember walking into Julia Richman HS thirty years ago when the partnership between Bill Milliken and Jim was just beginning. Comments from friends from high school and Tuck demonstrate the number of lives that he touched. I hope his family recognizes that they are joined by an extended group of colleagues who consider themselves part of a broader family as well.

As a classmate of Jim’s during his St. Joseph and Walsh Jesuit years, I was impressed by him as an outstanding student as well as a fine athlete. I sense that others would agree that you consistently expected successful achievements from his work and his contributions back to the community. While I was working at Van Kampen American Capital in the mid-1990s, Jim came to Oak Brook, IL as President of Morgan Stanley Asset Management to announce the acquisition of our company. His speech that day set a positive tone that reflected his leadership and high values. I was proud to have known him.

I had the pleasure to work with Jim at Morgan Stanley and was lucky enough to keep in touch with him over the years. The last time I saw him at his home in Greenwich two years ago I remarked how lucky he was to have such a full and rich life, engaged in exciting projects and surrounded by loved ones. I will think of him often in years to come.
I send my heartfelt condolences to his family.
Sincerely,
Peter Allen

So sorry to hear about Jim's passing. He will always be "MOOSE" to me and my family. I knew Jim from grade school at Holy Family through Walsh. Although I lost touch with him after Walsh I still saw what he did through the old school newsletter. He was an inspiration for all us. Good bye "MOOSE".

I had the opportunity to have Jim for Latin at Walsh several times. He was always the best of students, not only in his grades but in his attitude, his friendliness, and his unassuming manner. I have not seen him since high school, but he has remained in my mind as one of my finest students. He was a blessing for us all.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Jim's passing. I had the opportunity and privelage to work with Jim and spent time with him in Alaska. I learned from an individual with numerous qualities and strengths, but most of all I will never forget his deep seeded humility. My sincere condolances to his wonderful family.

I first knew Jim as a child, who one day just appeared out of nowhere in my classroom at St. Joseph Elementary. He had quietly skipped over 4th grade and landed firmly in the midst of a group of "older" kids who took great pleasure in teasing. Jim disarmed us with his gentleness and wit and towering stature. He remained a classmate through high school, where everyone who knew him respected him. I knew he was a leader then and had a sense that he would do great things. All of us in the class of 1970 at Walsh Jesuit had a special bond -- we have lost one of our brothers, but his legacy continues among us. My sincere condolances to his family.

We try to teach our children to be men and women for others. Jim learned well, and his deeds were generous and based in love for his alma mater, Walsh Jesuit. We are eternally grateful for his leadership.
