Thomas Brown Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Tommy Brown, 47, of Ormond Beach, on Friday, January 2, 2009 after a long illness. He is survived by his beloved wife of 21 years, Wanda Brown; sons, Devin andDerek Brown; mother, Jane Brown; and sister, Larissa Macaluso. Tommy was originally from Vineland, NJ, born August 1, 1961, and was the son of Jane and the late, Richard Brown. Tommy was well known nationally and internationally as a billiard player. He was a member of the Men's Professional Billiards Association and at one time was ranked 8th in the world. He competed professionally throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. He won the Florida State 9-Ball Championship, the European 8-Ball and 9-Ball Championships, and he placed eighth, and was one of three Americans invited to the invitation only 9-Ball Championship in Taipei, Taiwan. Tommy was written up in the Billiards Digest, a renowned billiard magazine, as the hot, new up and coming player of the year in 1988. He was nominated for the Billiards Hall of Fame in 2007. Tom and Wanda moved to Ormond Beach in 1990 and opened Brown's Billiards in Holly Hill. Brown's Billiards has become a local hot-spot for up and coming billiards players, many of whom Tommy mentored and gave private lessons to. Brown's Billiards has hosted many Pro and Amateur tournaments throughout its 20 year history. He touched the lives of many people and will be greatly missed. Visitation will be held at Haigh-Black Funeral Home, 167 Vining Court, Ormond Beach from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m on Monday, January 5, 2009. A mass will be celebrated at the Basilica of St. Paul on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at 1 p.m., with Father Tim Daly as celebrant. Private burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Devin and Derek's college savings account. On behalf of his family, all are invited to a reception Tuesday evening, January 6th from 5 until 7 p.m. at Brown's Billiards, located at 1595 Nova Road in Holly Hill.

Dear Wanda,
Its been some years since I saw you and Tommy and I often do Internet searches for Browns Billiard news while here in England. But I have only just come across the sad news of Tommy's passing and I am devastated!

Tommy was truly one of the finest people I have ever met in my 52 years and I was honoured to call him my friend. He had a glow about him that touched anyone fortunate to be in his company.

I have many wonderful memories of the times we shared in Miami and Daytona and will treasure them forever.

My heartfelt condolences to you and the boys.

Dear Aunt Jane, Larissa, Wanda, Devin & Derek,
We are with you all in spirit. I remember the family times in Vineland, NJ, when the family would get together. There are so many good memories to help ease the pain of losing the ones we love. I wish for you the gift that good memories with Tommy will bring to you as time passes. Take care.
With much love,

Dear Wanda,

The last time that I saw you and Tommy was approximately the summer of 1991 (I was in Central Florida with two male friends for Lollapalooza and you generously invited us over for a visit before we headed back to Miami). I originally met you and Tommy when Tommy was at Mr. C's in West Kendall, Florida. You were both incredibly kind to me and offered your friendship and trust (you entrusted me to house-sit Sammy, the cat). I don't know what made me google Tommy tonight, but my search led to great sadness.

I am so incredibly sorry for your loss, Tommy and your sons' loss and Tommy's Mom's loss. I was fortunate to know you and Tommy at the beginning of your beautiful marriage. I have thought often of the friendship that you and your husband extended to me (AND the impact of how I viewed your relationship), and regret not being able to see you again as the devoted partners that you have always been in my mind. Wanda, I don't think that I could ever fully express how much you changed my outlook on relationships; your advice has withstood two decades. I thank you.

Wanda, you taught me so much much about being a strong female. (Some of your wisdom still lingers with my life decisions to this day) I can only hope that you can feel the strength that you inspired in a 19-year-old girl. (Tommy taught me how to break a 9-ball rack that inspired fear in my hapless, male opponents -- he also was a kind ear and sounding board for my endless, teenage relationship troubles) I thank you and Tommy for what you added to my life during those years.

I will pray for you and your family tonight and in the upcoming months and years that you can overcome this devastating loss. Sometimes a relatively short friendship can have decades of consequences. I have truly benefited from the friendship that you and your husband extended to me. I don't know if you will ever read this, but if you do, feel free to contact me or just know that you are front and center in my thoughts and prayers.

My sincere love, support and gratitude of being able to know you both,
Megan (Miami, FL)

Dear Aunt Jane, Larissa, Wanda and children, So sorry for the loss of a great guy. It seems like only yesterday that our families would visit each other in New Jersey and have great times. From Aunt Jane's homemade icecream, to the beginning of Tommy's pool run. When someone mentions the game of pool to me, I always think of Tommy and tell them that my cousin was the best in the world in his time.He will be missed but always remembered.

My prayers and thoughts are with the Brown family. Even though I hadn't seen Tommy in quite a few years, I will always remember his tremendous gracefulness and skill around the green baize of the pool table. But most of all I will remember his kindness and willingness to help others.

Dear Aunt Jane, Larissa, Wanda, Devin & Derek,
Our hearts are broken. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. I think of the "dapper" young Tommy visiting during the holidays at my Dad's and then the gentleman he became..we still have the Billiard magazine with Tommy on the front cover in our den and his pool sticks grace our pool table. May his love and laughter help all of you at this very, very sad time. He will be terribly missed, but never forgotten. Love, Barb & Cliff Halper and Family

Tommy will be sorely missed. His passion for life and compassion for those in need was surpassed only by the love he held in high regard for his wife, his sons, and his mother & sister. It was an honor to be considered part of his family. May the pain of his passing be overshadowed by all of the wonderful memories we have of him, which we all keep in our hearts.
