Herman WALTHALL Obituary

Herman Walthall

Deacon Herman Walthall departed his life Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born in Campbell County on April 30, 1922, he was the son of the late Spurgeon and Mazie Pannell Walthall.

Mr. Walthall was preceded in death by his late wife, Fannie; his brothers, Elmoses and Houston; and his sister, Ethel Calloway.

In the 1960s, along with Fannie, he built, owned and operated Walthall's Drive-In Restaurant on Route 29 South, Rustburg.

An active member of the community, Mr. Walthall was a singer in both the Gospel Four and the Walthall Brothers Quartets. He further served on The Diamond Hill Neighborhood Watch Committee and the Community Dialogue on Race and Racism.

In his early years, after serving in the U.S. Army, he continued his membership at Cross Roads Baptist Church, faithfully serving on the Deacon Board. He later became a member of the Diamond Hill Baptist Church, dutifully serving as chairman of the DHBC Deacon Board.

Deacon Walthall is survived by his daughter, Hermina W. Hendricks (Donald) of Lynchburg; his son, Rick L. Walthall (Pamela) of Rocky Mount, N.C.; two grandchildren, Gerod and Chase; his sisters, Lillie Cundiff ( John) of Harrisburg, Pa., Addie Mae Millet of St. Petersburg, Fla., Julia Cabler and Verneice Cabler, both of Rustburg; a brother, Alonza Walthall (Mable) of Rustburg; two sisters-in-law, Gladys L. Clark (James) of Rustburg and Corrine L. Clark of Gretna; a brother-in-law, David Logan of Roanoke; and a host of many nieces, nephews and cousins. To Hermina and Ricky,
Your father was the best friends anyone could ever have. His smile and laugther would make the worst days so much better. I am a better person from having been associated with Herman. I hope I can have his energy and spirit as I grow older. I live out of town and did not hear of Herman's passing until now. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

“Scoobie”, Donnie, Ricky, Pam, Gerod & Chase,

Our truest and deepest sympathy is extended to you and your family in the loss of your Daddy, Father-N-Law, and GrandPa. Fret not your loneliness on empty days, but fill each waking hour in useful ways. Always extend your hand in comfort and in cheer and God will comfort you and hold you near. Family, as time goes on, we pray that the support and love of family and friends will comfort and strengthen you. Yes, Daddy Walthall is gone to a better place and we all loved him, but God loved him best. We love you very much and pray that God will wrap his loving arms around each of you as you honor the legacy of Daddy Walthall. May the sweet, sweet spirit of our Lord and Savior be with you today and every day henceforth.

Lovingly,

Mama Doe, Lil Doe, Octavia, Wanda, Rae Denise & Rae Rae

To the Wathall Family,
We, the officers and members of the Diamond Hill Neighborhood Watch Assoc. Inc., extend our heartfelt sympathies to your family . Mr.Wathall was one of our most faithful members.
Mr Wathall had a great love for his neighborhood and the surrounding community which was very evident in his tireless efforts to help improve them.
He was a man of many words. However he said what he meant and meant what he said.
He was a man that could easily walk side by side with the other neighborhood watch members picking up trash or talk very frankly to city officials about improvements needed in his community.
We will not only miss his voice but we will miss his generosity. Mr. Wathall gave unselfishly to our National Night out Against Crime block party our Thanksgiving dinner and any other event we might have sponsored.
We, like you his family members, will miss him and we can only pray that knowing others care as deeply as you do will bring some comfort in days to come.

May Gods peace surround you today and may His love give you the strength for tomorrow.

I had the pleasure of knowing and loving Herman from the first day I was a summer intern at CVLC in 1990 until his passing. The smile and genuine love of his fellow man were contagious and I'm greateful to have known such a man of faith, character and conviction. Herman was indeed "FINE".
