Daniel...I'm so sorry to hear of your precious loss. Old or young death is so painful. We have a hope that death, pain and suffering will soon be in the past (Revelation 21:3,4).
May you find the courage to continue on and strength in the memories.

Monica was a great person. I told her on many occasions "Your such a better person than I am." She would laugh and tell me to shut up or something like that. But I was serious. She was amazing.
It's hard to believe we were playing softball just a few months ago. Well, she was playing softball. I was standing in the field.
The love she and Dan shared was wonderful to see. When I first met them I would watch them and think.... they have what everyone wants. I wish it had been for a lifetime. I think of and pray for the families daily. God bless.

As I have read through the many entries in this guest book, it is so heartwarming to see just how much Monica touched each and every one of us. I had the pleasure of knowing and being friends with her throughout middle and high school, as well as seeing her smiling face at ECU through our Phi Sigma Pi events. She was truly a special person who I feel blessed to have known. Please know that she will be remembered for her kind heart and warm smile~

My memories of Monica was shopping at Maurices. She was always so funny and liked to get on her sister Mary's nerves! LOL! Just the way sisters at that age do. (They were teenagers) She was a very sweet, beautiful young lady. I know the world is less beautiful without her in it! My prayers are with you Mrs. Ump! God Bless you and your family. For those of us that had the honor of knowing Monica, had the honor of knowing a beautiful, honest, selfless, big-hearted person who who could make someone's day better just by coming into contact with them.
I had the privilege of being Monica's little brother in our Fraternity. I knew from the moment that I met her that I got the best big, and that everyone else knew it too! She was the coolest, the sweetest, and so full of life. Monica kept in touch with me even after so many years away from school. She had the amazing ability of making others feel so special. She took the the time to see how I was doing even with everything going on in her life.
She was a beautiful spirit full of the kind strength that others could only read about in a book or see in a movie.
For those of us that got to meet Monica think of ourselves as lucky, and the ones that did not will surely know about her through us. She will be forever remembered, greatly missed, and always loved.
Our prayers and thoughts are with her, her family, her friends, and her loved ones.

As everyone has already said, Monica was an amazing young lady. She has touched so many lives in life and in death. I have so many fond memories that include Monica; sleep overs, going to Ahoskie and the teen club, the ball park, etc. She was like the little sister that I never had. We are all better people for having been blessed to be a part of her life. We can all take comfort in knowing she is in a better place. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I had the pleasure of working with Monica for the past 3 years. I will never forget the first day I met her, it was my first day working at RHS and also her first year of teaching. I didn't have a clue what I was suppose to be doing. She made my first day and every day AWESOME! From that day we became close friends. She has taught me so much. She was so tough and never lost her spirit! School just isn't going to be the same without her smile and "Good Morning Girl" when I walk in the door. On the night Monica passed I dreamt of her. In my dream I had gone to visit her at home, when I walked in...there stood Monica talking, laughing and walking around. I said to her "Oh my goodness your all better" and she said "Yea girl, I feel great!" Whenever I feel sad I just think of my dream and I know that it was her way of telling me that she is okay now!

I have so many memories of Monica and I when we were children, as teenagers, adults and throughout our college years. I remember we would write each other during the summer months when we were in grade school, even though we lived 15 minutes away from each other. There were many nights at the ballpark and school that I would watch her play and the teamwork she portrayed was indescribable. One year, on a school field trip to Busch Gardens, Monica, Christy and I made a music video to Whoomp(There it is)! :) We still kept in contact while we were in college and I think about how much fun we all had on Halloween our freshman year. There are so many more memories that I treasure, as do all of us. I have thought of her and the rest of her family and close friends so many times over the past year. She will be forever missed by so many, but her courageousness will be an inspiration to all! I will always think about the memories that we shared and how much she impacted other people's lives. What a beautiful angel God has received! Dan, MQ, "Miss" Brenda, Paula, Mary, and the rest of Monica's family, you will continue be in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Daniel and Umphlett Family,
I just wanted to express my condolences for your loss. I was always impressed by Monica's attitude and stamina while fighting the cancer. I remember her making a point to walk with you all and the dogs in the evening. And I remember chatting with you all during those walks last summer. Monica approached her treatment plan with spunk and a willingness to fight. I sincerely believe that God has a special plan and place for Monica. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Sincerely, Cheryl

As I struggle for the "right" thing to say, I finally decided to say the obvious..........I will miss Monica very much. For the last year and a half I have found myself thinking of Monica on a daily basis, wondering how she's feeling, how she manages to be so strong and positive, wondering how her family and Daniel and closest friends are doing. Over the last few days, my thoughts and feelings are stronger than ever. I met Monica through my sister and I have great memories of times spent with she and Daniel. I do wish that our time together hadn't been cut so short, but I am glad that she is in heaven with our creator and no longer suffering. I feel blessed to have met and shared memories with Monica. To Daniel, family and closest friends, you are all in my thoughts and prayers......

I speak for my family when I say that we will all miss monica. I can remember seeing her playing in the dirt at many ballgames - with my little brother DJ. Growing up and becoming a beautiful young woman. Monica and I are both brothers in Phi Sigma Pi and I was so proud of her when I learned she had pledged. Monica exudes those three qualities of fellowship, leadership and scholarship. On behalf of the fraternity and my family - we will miss you monica. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

The last time I saw Monica was at Heather Hinton wedding and that last memory of her is what I want to remember of her. She was so beautiful as usual and so full of life and so happy she told me that day that her boyfried was playing golf that day and that is why he was not there so I never got to meet him but I know that he has to be a special man to go through what he has been through. I have thought of her many times over the weekend and it just seems so unfair to me but I have to keep reminding myself that things happen for a reason. I have known Monican since I was a little girl we played softball together and we went to school together. I will miss her more than I could ever imagine and my heart goes out to her family especially, MQ, Brenda, Paula and Mary Kay. You are in my prayers and my continous thought daily because you still have a strugle to go through.

I had the pleasure of taking Ms. Umphlett and her class on a field trip to the bowling center. We had a blast. That was the first time I met her and she was just so wonderful with her kids. Monica was truly the kind of person who makes you thankful for each and every moment! She had an electric personality that drew people close to her! The few times I was able to see Monica with her students it was evident that she had a genuine love for people!! Despite their varying needs and disabilities (abilities!) Monica loved each of them and treated them with the respect and care they truly deserved! She was so full of life and energy regardless of the many trials and battles her body was going through! I remember going to visit Monica at her house once she had gotten sick and feeling scared as I rang the door bell, like I was going to take one look at her and be broken because of how sick the cancer had made her, and then I remember taking one look at her face and seeing her big smile! And hearing her joke about how happy she was despite her circumstances! She was so alive when so many of other people would have been broken down and defeated, she was truly a survivor! She fought such a good fight! The last time I spoke to her on the phone I remember feeling so amazed by how she would ask me how I was feeling? Or how I was doing?? I just felt so honored and amazed that someone with some many things going on would care about me or wonder about my minor day to day “problems”… but that is exactly who Monica was to so many people! She worried about people when truly she was the one who needed everyone else the most! I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to Monica. There were so many times in mid-June when I just wanted to stop by her home but so often I felt like Monica (and especially her family) had so many other people visiting and I never wanted to be in the way … so it goes without saying that there is one thing I truly wanted to say to Monica that I never got to say…….. On July 3rd 2007 our son was born and had a great deal of difficulties … after our weeks in and out of the hospital I remember feeling so broken and then Monica came by the house to see us and Orion (our son) and to bring us a gift from her and Daniel and I remember feeling like ‘who am I to complain??’ Monica showed me that regardless of circumstances every single day is a gift, being able to have a child regardless of trials involved was a gift (one Monica couldn’t know) and I just remember seeing her with Orion and feeling so blessed to know a person who posses so much strength and courage. We all say not to take life for granted but most of us do… Monica you showed me in a very real and life changing way that every moment is gift from God and that we should never take any of it for granted or complain or worry because we are just fortunate to be here... I wish I could have told Monica that through her ultimate trial she taught me (and so many others) how to not give up! To Monica’s friends, and family and so many others who knew her better than I can even imagine especially Daniel, her parents, siblings, and close friends YOU ARE TRULY IN MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS! As I am sure you know Monica is truly in a better place, and although that will never change how much it hurts to not have her in this place she will never be far from anyone hearts and memories! She was and will remain a beautiful and exceptional person who we are all better to have known!
With much sincerity and sympathy,
Amanda Ramirez (and Brian Myers and Orion!)
…Orion turned 1 on July 3rd …I truly feel like Monica is his special angel!!

I was so blessed to know Monica and her wonderful work with her kids.
She had a special place in her heart for those kids and a big smile for them each day. Her children will always have a special place in their heart for Ms. Umphlett. I would look forward to seeing her myself everyday. Monica was a very strong , couragious woman with a heart of gold and a smile to light up the world. She did not let this illness get her down. She was a fighter. To the family and to each one of us that new Monica, it is comforting to know that she is no longer in pain. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone that has been touched by Monica's wonderful spirit. I will miss her greatly. The Lord just recieved a beautiful Angel.

I remember Monica being the little sister that I never had. It seems like only yesterday I was riding the bus to Mary Kay and Monica's house where we would play kickball in the front yard, ride bikes, or play monkey in the middle in the living room. I also recall an early morning trip to Richmond to see Santa Claus come down the chimney at Miller & Rhodes Department Store. Awww, the good ol' days...what I wouldn't give to see those days again. But time marches on and so must we. I only hate that we all have to march through the rest of our time here without Monica.
I know she fought the good fight and now it is time for Monica to rest. I hope the family finds comfort in knowing that she is at peace now.
My deepest sympathy to the family. May God touch and bless your family the way Monica blessed our lives.

As a child, I always loved the days Miss Brenda took "the crew" to gymnastics because it meant I got to play with Monica. She was always so much fun, so lively, so funny...Growing up in Gates County, it's hard NOT to befriend everyone, but Moncia would've done that anywhere, and she DID. She was just that kind of person, the kind of person who lights up every heart in the room without even trying. She will be missed by every person who came into contact with that light...My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Monica was truely an exceptional person. I had the privelege to watch her turn from a free-spirited teenager, to an exploring ECU student, into a remarkable and talented woman. Monica was like my second daughter and Christy's only sister. The bond between them and me will never be broken, even now. Monica's battle with cancer only showed what an exceptional woman she really was. Her strength, courage, and sacrifice seemed effortless, but we all knew it wasn't. She continued to live life to the fullest, even when she knew her time here would be shorten. That showed all of us what she was made of. Her time here was short, but will always be remembered and truly loved. She will always be my "Monicow" to me and deeply missed.

Monica was such a bright and vivacious person who touched so many lives and brought so much joy everywhere she went. Her courage and strength only grew every day and she was such a fighter. She will be missed every second of every day but she is smiling down at all of us, sharing her warmth and love.

Brenda, M.Q., Paula, Mary K and Dan. As I thinking of what to say, my God, so many memories, from coached pitch, through high school, softball, my left hander, that i could allways count on for that base hit, remember "shoot the moon" seems like yesterday. She was Megan's hero, and Meg sure wore all of her cloths. Then that smile, that laughter, thats what i will allways see when i think of her. Just know my thoughts and prayers are with you, and i love you all.

Monica was more than an in-law...she was my sister. She will be carried on in our memories, hearts, thoughts, and prayers. She was loved and will be missed by myself and many others. I can only hope and pray that we will meet again one day!

Missing my little sis and one of the best friends a girl could ask for. She was my hero, so strong, sweet, and smart. She followed her dreams and inspired me in so many ways. I will miss talking to her every night and catching up on each others' day; and knowing that she would be there for me no matter what if I called on her. I am so sad that this earth had to lose her so early, but glad that she is healthy and happy once again. I will just hold on to the fact that we will meet again someday.

To Monica's family...my heart goes out to all of you. I only knew Monica for short time but loved her from the first time I met her. I would love to tell her thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your sister with me. I have never had such a bestest friend. Monica was an inspiritation to all of us for the fight that she fought. Thank you for making such an impression on my heart that I will never forget. It was truly a blessing to know someone as dear as you. You touched more people than you will ever know and we are lucky to have been able to have known an angel on Earth. Love and prayers to Paula, My Squirrel, Mom and Dad Umphlett, Mary and David, and Dan. I love you all.

My prayers are with the family and friends of Monica. She and I were good friends in High School and have continued to communicate though email since graduating. She will truly be missed. My best memories are hanging out with her after school, while waiting for our basketball games to begin. Monica is now in a better place! We all must continue to pray and trust God!

Monica's life and death has affected so many people. I wonder if she realized how special she was or what an impact she had on every person that ever knew her. No matter how many miles or how long it's been since you saw her, you knew that love or bond with her hadn't changed a bit. That's just how genuine Monica was. You never had to question it. She more than lit up a room, she would light up your life when you were around her. My heart goes out to her family and to Daniel. She will be missed dearly and it doesn't seem fair, but she has a spot in Heaven and we should all be secure in that. We love you Monica. We will see you again one day and never have to let go of you again!

We would like to express our sympathy to the family of Monica. We only knew her a short time but she was a very important member of our Relay Family. We will surely miss her and continue to fight now even harder to see that cancer does not take another loved one from us too soon. May God Bless all her friends and family and feel free to contact us if we can do anything to help you.

My heart goes out to Daniel, the Umphlett family, and to all friends and family of Monica. She was such a wonderful person & I'm privileged to have gotten to know her and call her a friend. She was so brave and positive in the face of something so terrifying. I will never forget her or the love that I witnessed between her and the love of her life, Daniel. She impacted many lives and all of us will miss her terribly. She was a blessing to her kids she taught & I'm sure they will not soon forget the kindness and love she showed them. I am so very sorry for your loss, but she is not in any pain anymore & hopefully that will bring some much needed comfort. God Bless you all.

Monica, you will be greatly missed. You were always smiling, laughing, courageous, helpful, kind, singing "froggy" songs to little children and always willing to listen. Anyone and everyone who ever had the privilege to meet you is a better person for it. I'm sending much love to your family and friends during this difficult time. We all know you are happy and in a better place, however, we still miss you. We love you and are glad you are at peace!
