Herman Robbins

ROBBINS - Herman, M.D., October 16, 1913 - June 15, 2008. Orthopaedic Surgeon, Chairman of the Hospital for Joint Diseases (1972-1981), and Chairman of The Board Of Physicians Reciprocal Insurance (1991-2008) died peacefully in Great Neck, NY surrounded by his children Karen and Philip. He was passionate about medicine and his family which included his cherished wife Sylvia, to whom he was married for 64 years, his late daughter Judith, his grandchildren, Michael and Lauren and daughter-in-law, Esther. Dr. Robbins attended Anderson Medical College, Scotland and Universite de Lausanne, Switzerland graduating in 1941. During World War II he served as Captain and Battalion Surgeon in the European Theater receiving a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for heroism. His distinguished medical career of service, education, and leadership spanned over 65 years. He was devoted to his patients and to the many young residents he mentored. Tennis, sailing and his beloved Yankees added to his enjoyment in life. He will be missed for his kind heart, warm sense of humor and sage counsel. Services will be held on Friday, June 20th, 1pm at Riverside-Nassau North Chapels, 55 North Station Plaza, Great Neck, NY, 516-487-9600.
