I just found out today about Bob's passing. My deepest condolenences go out to his family. I also knew Bob from wheelchair tennis. He had a presence at every tournament he attended. I remember him calling himself "Consolation Bob" because he ended up in the consolation draw more often than he wanted. He tickled me with his rebellious streak of wearing shirts with sleeves torn off instead of "country club" polo's. We played as doubles partners in Greensboro once and he cracked me up the whole time on the court. Carry on fellow Marine, until we meet again!

August 20, 2007

I have many great memories growing up in the wheelchair tennis community going to tournaments around the country when my dad would play. There were always good times when Bob was around. He will definitely be missed!

August 19, 2007

I never had the pleasure of meeting Bobby but I feel like I know him through all the wonderful, loving and funny stories his sister, Paula, shared with me. I met Bobby's sister, Paula, mother, Tina and daughter, Chera while living at the V.A. Hospital for 1 month with my dad. Their love, support, tears, laughter, and dedication to Bobby every minute of every day and every night is ingrained in my heart and brings tears of love and warmth just thinking about all of you. Bobby was very blessed to have this wonderful family. Bobby, Tina, Paula and Chera, I love you all and will never forget you. I carry all of you in my heart and feel blessed to have met such a wonderful family.

August 4, 2007

My deepest sympathy to Bob's family. I was very sorry to hear of his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Bob was a special kind of guy. He had a great personality and made me feel welcome at the tournaments. I first met Bob at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows in the early 1980s. Steve Cohen, Ron Hopper, and I drove up together to play in the NY tournament shortly after we got our group started here in Washington, DC. After only a few months of practice, our fledgling team thought it could easily take on the rest of the wheelchair tennis world. Our very first road trip was to Flushing Meadows to play against Bob and the rest of the NY team. They quickly showed us we needed much more practice! But, Bob and the others agreed to come to DC if we could set up a tournament -- maybe the following year. Steve, Ron, and I planned the tournament while driving back in the car from NY that weekend -- and it took place about six weeks later as part of the men's professional tournament. Thanks to Bob and the rest of the NY team coming en masse that year and for so many other years to support us, that tournament is pushing 25 years old now.

Bob, you will be missed. Thanks for all you did for your country and for wheelchair tennis.

I played wheelchair tennis with Bobby. Once we were down at Washington DC playing near the L'Eggs Mason tournament and while the national anthem was playing, he took the lead of stopping our play as usual and held his hand over his heart. We all joined in on all four courts.Folks walking by stopped and looked and some of them joined in. His patriotism and sacrifice were something I admired and cherished as well as other wonderful qualities, like his sense of humor. He will be greatly missed.

July 29, 2007

I'll always remember Bobby as a former soldier who happens to be a tennis player. His duty to his country was always on his mind. When he'd come to the DC tournament, which is played during an ATP tour event, he would always ask everyone to stop playing their matches when the Star Spangled Banner played in the stadium. He'd be right in the middle of a game and he'd stop and put his hand on his chest until the song had finished. I always admired his respect and patriotism. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to those who knew him and loved him.

I have known Bobby since the late 70's where our first laughs were at the TriState Wheelchair Games. The laughter increased with wheelchair sports, tennis and friendship. I was fortunate enough to have many miles and smiles with this pioneer of wheechair tennis. I am proud to call him my friend.

I went to North Shore with Bobby. He was always the center of attention. When anyone needed a laugh - he was the guy. Back in 1968, while stationed at Camp LeJeune, it was about 4:30am and still dark. I was standing with hundreds of Marines waiting to get into the mess for chow. Out of the darkness, I heard someone laughing. It was distinct and one of a kind - Bobby Curran! I broke ranks and followed this song from the past and there he was....big as life. We had a few minutes of great conversation and that moment in time is what I will remember best about him. He had many challenges in his life and always his spirit moved him on. I will think of him often. My condolences to Bobby's family.

To Bob's Family and Friends : My deepest condolences and heart felt prayers go out to you as you deal with this loss. Bob will be missed greatly. I too remember the wheel chair tennis tournament in Va Beach with Bob riding his hand cycle and him just talking to us as always with a high spirited attitude and lots of spunk ! I only have fond memories of him. He always struck me a good man and very friendly and out going. I hope he's with the Lord now as I would want all of you who knew him and Loved him.

I can still remember the first time I met Bobby at a tennis tournament and how I instantly knew he would be the entertainment of the event. His laugh was contagious and I always thought he was up to something because he had that glint in his eye when he smiled. I truly appreciated Bobby's sense of humor and patriotism, and I'll fondly remember him wearing his sleeveless American flag t-shirt at the tournament in Delaware and laughing - probably at Van...but none the less, laughing!
Thank you for all you did for wheelchair tennis - you will be missed.

Bobby, Bobby, Bobby you will be missed. That smile and laughter!!! I will always reminder our early years of wheelchair tennis and the EPVA tennis team. On a very hot Atlanta 4th of July, who knows what year, Bob and Van just won a doubles match and we poured a bucket of ice water on them. Bobby's reaction was so funny. I still laugh today thinking of it.
