Estelle Whitman Obituary

Estelle A. Whitman 1928 - 2008 ADAMS Estelle A. Whitman, 80, of 14 Summer St. died Saturday morning, Aug. 30, 2008, at the Williamstown Commons Care Center. Born in Adams on Feb. 28, 1928, daughter of James and Alice Bligh McClement, she attended Adams schools and graduated from the former Adams High School in 1947. She moved with her husband for a short period of time to Rockland and then to Pittsfield, Maine, returning to Adams in 1950 when they established their family business, The Hardware Shop, where she worked as secretary and treasurer until she retired in 1996. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, although later in life she attended St. Mark's Episcopal Church, where she was a member of the St. Mark's Guild. She was an avid Boston Celtic and Red Sox fan. Her three sons were the love of her life. She leaves her husband, Robert Whitman, whom she married Oct. 16, 1948. Besides her husband, she leaves three sons, William Whitman and his wife, Mary, and Richard Whitman, all of Adams, and David Whitman of Reading; seven grandchildren, Nathaniel Whitman, Evan Whitman, John Whitman, Julie Whitman, Laura Alicea, Justin Nowell, and Lily Silver; four great-grandchildren, Kayla Whitman, Ethan Whitman, Marcus Hillard and Brianna Hillard, and one sister-in-law, Eleanor George of North Adams. She was predeceased by one daughter, Wendy Ann Whitman, and by one sister, Nancy Purnell. FUNERAL NOTICE: Services for Estelle A. Whitman will take place Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at 11 a.m. from the TROTTIER PRINGLE FUNERAL HOME, 6 Summer St., with the Rev. William Wilson, pastor of the Stamford Community Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Street Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. Donations in her memory can be made to the VNA and Hospice of Northern Berkshire, or the Adams Ambulance Fund through the funeral home.

I took care of Estelle at Sweetbrook for a short time. Even after she went home, we still kept contact with each other. She was a sweet woman who I will miss very much.
