On February 24, 2008 at 6:53 am, at the age of 88 years, Tom Melton of Golden Valley went to meet his savior Jesus Christ, following a four month bout with cancer and finally succumbing to pneumonia. He lived an honorable life and served his Savior and this world and community well. He tried to put the Lord first in his life.
Tom was preceded in death by his father Eli Melton and his mother Mary Etta Rollins Melton, his son Tom Daniel Melton, and a brother, Frank Wheeler Melton.
Tom is survived by his wife Dorothy Louise Calton Melton, married on August 20, 1949, they were together 58 years. He was a devoted husband and father. Tom is also survived by two sons, Michael David Melton and his wife Susan, of Huntersville, Don Calton Melton and his wife Leslie of Golden Valley. Tom has five wonderful grandchildren, Eric Andrew, Clinton Thomas, Eli Justin, Caitlin Faith, and Emily Grace Melton. One sister, Dorothy Melton Newton of Golden Valley, and a sister in law, Ruby Kilby Melton of Bostic. Many nieces and nephews survive.
Tom was a devoted member of Golden Valley United Methodist Church. He served in numerous capacities, including Lay Leader, Sunday School Superintendant, Chairman of the Trusteees, and many more. Tom gave generously of his time and financial support to ensure the continued prosperity of the church founded by his Melton ancestors.
Tom was a World War II veteran, he served in Mark Clark's 5th Army in North Africa and Italy. He was a radio repairman instructor. He served in Salerno Cassino Anzio campaigns to remove the Germans from Italy.
He was a member of The Forest City Gideons Camp, Golden Valley Community Club, Cherry Mountain Ruritan Club and the Sunshine Civic Club.
Tom, for more than fifty years, has been the primary influence keeping alive the local tradition of Abraham Lincoln's Rutherford County birth.
Tom graduated from Pfeiffer College, NC State University, and Appalachian State.
He was an educator for many years. He served as Principal of Moriah, Hollis, and Bostic schools and taught math at Isothermal Community College. He was a State Farm insurance agent for 42 years. He also raised cattle and farmed on the family farm.
He lived a full, prosperous life and blessed many people, and was well thought of by many.
The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008 at Golden Valley United Methodist Church. Rev. Dan Looper and Rev. Gary Smith will officiate. The body will lie in state thirty minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The Visitation will be held from 5 PM until 8 PM Monday, Feb. 25, at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home.
