Paul Greilick Obituary

TRAVERSE CITY — Paul B. Greilick died June 13, 2008. Born in Virginia to Donald and Reva (Gore) on July 21, 1956, Paul was raised from infancy on Old Mission Peninsula.

After graduation from Traverse City Central High School, Paul earned a bachelor's degree from Oral Roberts University. He earned a master's degree and Ph.D. from Western Michigan University in Psychology. Paul interviewed and was hired at the Burns Clinic in Petoskey and practiced there until the clinic closed. He then came to Traverse City where he opened his own practice, which he maintained for a number of years.

In spite of the fact that Paul achieved a terminal degree in his field of study, his greatest passion was the nurturing of his children, Kristin, Olivia, and Parker. He practiced and modeled life-long learning in an eclectic assortment of subjects. He instilled in his children a love of both the sciences and the humanities.

Paul was an extraordinary chef and his creations delighted the pallets of his entire family. Paul loved music — as a child he played the viola; at 50 he took up the bass guitar! He also shared his love of outdoor activities with his children, from windsurfing to alpine skiing. A favorite activity of the entire family was enjoying a good bonfire, made by an expert with a wicked and wonderful sense of humor.

Like his mother Reva, Paul was a gifted visual artist. Exemplified in his photography, he captured the essence of a moment and revealed a profound understanding of human connections.

Paul deeply loved the Grand Traverse Bay area and was keenly appreciative of his ancestral roots. He was raised on the Gore family cherry orchards in "the old farm house." On his father's side, the Greilick immigrants were some of the first settlers establishing this community. Their philanthropic gifts greatly enriched the public domain.

He was loved and will be greatly missed by his wife Carol (Parker); and his adoring children Kristin of Chicago, Olivia (age 12), and Parker (age 8) of Traverse City. Grieving his loss are his mother Reva (Ron) Newman of Traverse City; his father Donald (Robley) of Florida; his brother Noel (Elaine) of Florida; and his sister Laurel (Rick) Wright of Montana; as well as sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, nephews and nieces.

A gathering for friends and family will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 18, at noon, followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. with Pastor Tamara Williams officiating.

Memorial contributions may be directed to a fund which is being established for the Greilick children's education in care of Traverse City State Bank, or to Northern Lakes Community Mental Health. Envelopes for both will be available at the funeral home.

The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City; www.reynolds-jonkhoff.com
