Memorial services celebrating the life of Edward Stoehr, age 90, of Norwood Young America were held Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 2:00 PM at United Methodist Church in Norwood Young America. Officiating was Rev. Wayne Swanson. The organist was Lori Kloth. The congregational hymns included “How Great Thou Art,” “Living For Jesus’ and The Old Rugged Cross.” Visitation was held one hour prior to the services at the church.
Edward Wickham Stoehr was born March 25, 1919 the son of August and Laura (Short) Stoehr in Mineral, Washington. He was raised in Chicago and attended Crane Tech High School. He worked as an usher at a movie theatre, where he once escorted Judy Garland to her seat for the premier of one of her films. While at a church function, he met Verlaine Zweifel, who was in Chicago visiting an aunt. The two were married on his birthday in 1941. He entered the Air Force that year and served in Italy. After leaving the service, he followed in her father’s footsteps and worked as a printer. Their growing family eventually settled in the Twin Cities, where he spent twenty years working at the Star Tribune as a linotype operator and in composing. He enjoyed gardening – taking pride in producing bumper crops of tomatoes and raspberries, and stamp collecting; he was known for his very dramatic handlebar mustache; his unwavering patriotism and especially loved to travel. Ed and Verlaine traveled with their children and then continued to do so after becoming empty nesters. They took their RV from the Pacific Northwest to the Carolinas to the Maritime Provinces of Canada to the desert Southwest. The favorite destination was probably Desert Hot Springs in California. Ed was a member of the VFW and the American Legion in which he served as vice commander.
On Thursday, July 23, 2009, Edward entered his eternal rest at his home at the age of 90 years, 3 months and 28 days. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years.
