Thomas Franklin Beddow
Thomas Franklin "Frank" Beddow Thomas Franklin "Frank" Beddow, 94, of Charlottesville, passed away on Monday, December 3, 2012, at Rosewood Village.

Frank was born in Charlottesville on April 4, 1918, the son of the late Thomas Alvin Beddow and Mary Duffell Beddow. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Doris, formerly Doris Evelyn Hitchins of Middletown, Rhode Island, who he married on August 1, 1942; a daughter, Janine Beddow Armstrong; and a son-in-law, Mark Douglas Simpson. He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Beddow Simpson of Ruckersville; a brother, James Fulton Beddow and his wife, Margaret Anne, of Charlottesville; a sister, Caroyl June Gooch of Charlottesville; two nieces, Mary Scott Rhoads of Stanardsville and Melinda Harris of Gambrillis, Maryland; and a son-in-law, William T. Armstrong of Lexington Park, Maryland. After graduation from Lane High School in Charlottesville, he worked in Richmond, Virginia, and in Florence, South Carolina, before enlisting in the United States Navy in September, 1939. He served all during World War II in the destroyer Navy and saw action in the North Atlantic, South Pacific and the South China Sea. After an Honorable Discharge as Chief Petty Officer in September, 1945, he entered the University of Virginia from which he graduated in 1950. He taught at Greenwood High School in Albemarle County under the principalship of the highly regarded, Ben Hurt. He also served in the Navy Reserves for more than 30 years. Frank entered the Federal Civil Service in 1952 and served in various capacities and locations until he retired in 1977. He was then employed by the Rappahannock Area Agency on Aging in Fredericksburg as Executive Director until he again retired in 1989. He and his wife moved to Florida, in 1989, and enjoyed the weather and golf, until 1996, when they returned to Charlottesville. Frank was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He had served as Deacon and Elder in Presbyterian churches in various locations where his job took him. He was a member of Charlottesville Elks Lodge #389 and was a past member of the Chancellor Lions Club in Spotsylvania, Virginia, where he held the offices of Secretary and President. While living and working in Charlottesville during the 1960's, he founded and was first President of the Fairview Swim Club. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church with the Reverend David Forney officiating.
