SMITH, Robert Thompson, of Charlottesville, Va., passed away December 29, 2012. He was born on September 15, 1926 in Philadelphia, Pa., to the late Milton Truman and Elsie Thompson Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Betty Jane Schangles Smith, whom he met in the fourth grade at Lake Bluff Elementary School in Shorewood, Wis. He is survived by his son, Michael and wife, Susan Smith, of Richmond, Va.; daughter, Laurel and husband, Louis Hallman, of Unionville, Pa.; three grandchildren, Jody Hallman, Jeffrey Smith, Jaclyn Hallman; and brother, Frank H. Smith of Concord, N.C. Bob attended Shorewood High School, graduating in 1944. Both he and his wife were graduation commencement speakers. After graduation he joined the United States Navy, serving overseas during World War II with the Navy Scouts and Raiders. Bob and Betty were married January 29, 1949. In November 1950 they moved to Albemarle County's Richland Farm off the Old Lynchburg Road. While in Charlottesville he became a commercial real estate broker. In 1991 Bob formed Community Services Housing, Inc. (CSH), which provides affordable housing for mentally and physically handicapped persons in the Charlottesville community. Today CSH houses over 150 people. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to CSH at P.O. Box 7120, Charlottesville, Va. 22906.
