Alton Engel Obituary

1920 - 2013
Alton Carl "Tony" Engel October 3, 1920 - March 15, 2013 Tony Engel, beloved husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend, stepped very peacefully into the loving arms of our Lord Jesus Christ on Friday, March 15, at 2:13 p.m. Tony was born in Mohall, North Dakota, on the farm homesteaded by his parents, Carl Jay Engel and Burniece Harris Engel. Graduating from high school at age 16 during the Great Depression, he put himself through college, sometimes working full-time, attending Fresno State and then graduating from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1943. Studying further, he obtained a license to practice civil engineering. After enlisting in the U.S. Navy during WWII, Tony served in the Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged as a lieutenant junior grade. Upon moving to Bakersfield, he worked as an engineer for S. A. Camp Companies. On April 1, 1965, Tony opened his own engineering firm, Engel & Company, Inc. He was loved by his employees for the kindness and values he imparted, and was held in high esteem by his business associates for his integrity and down-to-earth approach to problem-solving. In 1950, in Bakersfield, he married the love of his life, June Clegg. They celebrated 62 years of marriage last September, and raised three children in a home filled with love and laughter. In the 1960's Tony committed his life to Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He came to believe what the Bible teaches, that "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," (Romans 3:23), and "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). Blessed by good health and a sharp mind, Tony never retired but worked full-time past his ninety-second birthday. He loved engineering but was happiest spending time with family, and he made it his goal to build many good memories with his wife and children. He taught his family by example and by encouragement not to complain, not to be wasteful, and to find fun in the everyday, laugh at troubles, shrug at the loss of material things, and cherish relationships with family and friends. In his last years he displayed a determination to finish well, growing even kinder, more patient and more trusting of God's hand in his life. His certain confidence in God enabled him to face the end of his life completely at peace. Tony is preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Warren "Pat" Engel, Harley Engel, and Aloha Engel Gibbon. He is survived by so many who love him, including his wife June, his children and their spouses: Kim and Arnold Anchordoquy, Joe and Laura Engel, Heidi and Mark Bagby; and by two sisters-in-law, Jeanne Engel and Marie Clegg, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, as well as many nephews and their families. The family wishes to express a special thanks to extended family and friends for all the love, prayers and support, and to Bakersfield Heart Hospital and Alternative Care for their professional care and comfort. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kern County Youth for Christ or The Mission at Kern County. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., at Riverlakes Community Church, 4301 Calloway Drive, Bakersfield, in the Main Auditorium Building. "Very truly I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life." John 5:24 www.bakersfield.com/obits
