Harold T. Beckman, age 91, of Council Bluffs, passed away, April 3, 2013, at Primrose Retirement Community.
Harold was born on the family farm at Dodgeville, Des Moines County, Iowa, on July 6, 1921, to the late Edward J. and Cecilia J. (Walters) Beckman. He graduated from Sperry, Iowa High School in 1938, earned his BA degree cum laude from Parsons College in 1942, and Juris Doctor degree from Northwestern University Law School in 1948, member of Iowa and Illinois State Bars. Harold was past Senior Partner of Smith Peterson Law Firm. He was a veteran of WWII, where he was an Aerial Navigation Instructor in the Army Air Corps, AT-7, B-17 and B-29 aircraft.
Harold was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, 50 plus year member and past Service Officer and Commander of Rainbow Post #2, American Legion, past State Legislative Chairman for Iowa Department, The American Legion, 50 plus year member of the Council Bluffs Elks Club, member of the Council Bluffs Noon Rotary Club, founding member and past president and 35-year member of Board of Trustees of Council Bluffs Industrial Foundation, founding member of Board of Directors of St. Albert Educational System, founding member and President Emeritus of Council Bluffs Library Foundation, founding member and past Chairman of Iowa Lawyers Trust Account Commission of Iowa State Supreme Court, member of American Bar, Iowa State Bar, Fourth Judicial District Bar, and past President of Pottawattamie County Bar Associations, past Chairman of Pottawattamie County Republican Party, and delegate to 1952 Republican National Convention nominating Gen. Dwight Eisenhower for President, Sgt. at Arms at 1960 Republican National Convention, member of Boards of Directors of local charities, Omaha-Council Bluffs United Fund, Council Bluffs Chamber of Commerce, St, Joseph Cemetery Association, St. Albert Educational Foundation and various corporations for profit.
Harold married college sweetheart, Jeanne M. (Lawrence) Beckman of Fairfield, Iowa, in 1943, who preceded him in 2011.
Survivors include children, Lawrence J. (Margaret) Beckman, Mark S. (Jean) Beckman, all of Council Bluffs, Teresa L. "Teri" (fiance', Vincent Fasone) Beckman, of Overland Park, Kan.; grandchildren, Heather Beckman Binkley (John), Courtney Beckman Donaldson (Brian), Lindsay Beckman Sikora (Andrew), Camille Beckman, Chad Beckman (Candice), Eric Beckman (Carolyn); great grandchildren, Ian, Josephine and Madeline Binkley, Matthew Donaldson, Samantha, Evan, Zoe and Emery Sikora; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family, Sunday, 5 to 7 p.m., with a Christian Wake Service at 6 p.m., at the Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial, Monday, 10:30 a.m., at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Rev. Glen Wilwerding, pastor will be the celebrant. A lunch will immediately follow in the parish hall. Private interment, Tuesday, in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Patrick Catholic Church, St. Albert Educational Foundation, Council Bluffs Public Library Foundation, Iowa Western Community College Foundation, Hospice of SWI or a local charity.
