CARL SHARP Obituary

SHARP, Carl Mason, 81, a loving and loyal husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and cherished friend, was welcomed home by his Heavenly Father on Friday, April 5, 2013. Known for his heart warming smile and generous heart, he never met a stranger and made you feel welcomed whenever you were in his presence. He was loved by so many and will be missed by all. Born on September 18, 1931 in Portsmouth, Va., to Mr. and Mrs. Horace W. Sharp, he was a proud U.S. Army Korean War veteran, he attended Woodrow Wilson High School and after the Korean War, he worked at Dominion Power (Vepco), where he retired after 43 loyal years. Carl was Past Worshipful Master and member of Washington Lafayette Lodge. He also was a member of the Scottish Rite, 32nd Degree, where he earned the Distinguished Rank and Decoration of Knight and Commander of the Court of Honor, passed High Priest of the Port Norfolk Royal Arch Chapter, and a Charter member of the Knights of St. Andrew Scottish Rite, Portsmouth Valley. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church for years, and active in the choir until he moved to Glen Allen a few years ago, where he joined New Hanover Presbyterian Church and Bell Choir of his Verena Retirement Community. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Joan Sharp; and his daughter, Karen S. Rountree of Mechanicsville, Va.; and two sons, Paul J. Sharp of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Mark A. Sharp of Portsmouth, Va. Other survivors include his brother, Robert Sharp of Advance, N.C.; sisters, Frances Ashbacher of Toledo, Ohio, and Katherine Atkinson of Bluffton, S.C.; many beautiful grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Over the years Carl fought the good fight, finished the race and certainly kept the faith (2 Tim 4:7). The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 11, at 1 p.m. at Cool Spring Baptist Church, 9283 Atlee Station Rd. Interment with a Masonic Service will be held Friday, April 12, at 12 noon at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens in Suffolk, Va.
