Arthur MacConochie Obituary

Arthur Alastair MacConochie Arthur Alastair MacConochie, 89, died quietly at home Friday, May 3, 2013, after a long life well lived. He was born in Huddersfield, England, the son of the late Agnes Oliphant and Arthur F. MacConochie; and the widower of Jane Barr MacConochie. Mr. MacConochie came to the United States with his parents as an infant and grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia. During World War II he served with the United States Army Air Corps in North Africa, India, and the South Pacific. Following three years overseas at war, he came home finished college at the University of Virginia. He taught English at Norfolk Academy from 1950 until 1990, where he is remembered for quiet service, kindness shared by leaving harsh words unspoken, the power of well chosen words to make a better world, and lifelong insistence on finding the best in everyone he met. Believing that all students should have a chance to achieve and demonstrate excellence, he established and nurtured an Advanced Placement testing program, and contributed time and talent to AP programs at the state and national levels. Upon retirement from active teaching in 1990, Mr. MacConochie lived in Colonial Place, Norfolk, where he was active in the civic league, and cheerfully cared for his many friends and family. He is survived by his daughters, Stuart Murphy and her husband, Rex, and Margaret Bright and her husband, Gary; a son, Frank MacConochie and his wife, Anne; a sister, Sheila Ragsdale; brothers, Ian and Frank MacConochie; grandchildren, Jane Murphy, Anna Bright, Albert Bright and his wife, Lindsay, Alex MacConochie, and Charles MacConochie. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 405 Talbot Hall Rd., Norfolk, VA 23505. A reception will follow the service in the social hall of the church. A family graveside service will follow at Grace Episcopal Church in Keswick, Virginia, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Norfolk Academy, c/o The Arthur MacConochie Scholarship Fund, 1585 Wesleyan Dr., Norfolk, VA 23502 or to the Church of the Ascension. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apt., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be made through www.hdoliver.com.
