Lawson Dowell Obituary

Lawson "Larry" Dowell Lawson "Larry" Dowell, 83, of Broomfield, Colorado, passed away Monday, May 13, 2013. Larry was born in 1929 in North Garden, Virginia to the late Aginora Whindleton Dowell Page and the late Early Dowell. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Ernestine Walker and Estelle Johnson of Charlottesville Virginia. Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1949 and served as a control tower operator. Upon retiring from the United States Air Force in 1970 as a Master Sergeant, Larry continued his government service as an air traffic controller in the Federal Aviation Administration. During his United States Air Force and FAA career, Larry improved operating procedures, developed training programs, and mentored his crew. Larry retired from the FAA as an Air Traffic Control Specialist in 1989. Larry's career is characterized by many commendations. In his retirement, Larry took great joy in pursuing his many hobbies and interests. Larry was a passionate golfer and bowler. He loved sports and enjoyed watching it in person and on TV. Larry also loved building electronic kits and had a great fondness for Jazz. Larry will be terribly missed by his family and friends, including his loving wife, Annette Dowell of Broomfield, Colorado; children, Yvette Dowell of Chicago, Illinois, John Smith of Atlanta, Georgia, Monica Traille of Atlanta, Georgia, Zepher Smith (Edrice Barrett) of Atlanta, Georgia, Frank Smith of Boise, Idaho, and Patrice Smith (Scott McEwen) of Erie, Colorado; grandchildren, Moneka (Star), Mashyia (Timothy), Anya, Leon, Justin, Ian, Tyler, and Travis; sister, Barbara (Harry Thompson) of Roanoke, Virgina; brother-in-law, James Walker Sr. of Charlottesville, Virginia; devoted nephew, Andre "Tony" Lewis of Charlottesville, Virginia; and his loving nieces, nephews and numerous other relatives. A graveside service with military funeral honors will be held at 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, in Staging Area B at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
