Don Baldwin Obituary

Don Baldwin, of Crawford, died Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at the age of 70. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 24, at Crawford First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Decee Horton and the Rev. Rebecca Hull officiating. Interment will follow in Crawford Cemetery under the direction of Cole Funeral Home, 1113 West Fifth Street, McGregor. A visitation, with refreshments will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 23, at Cole Funeral Home.

Don was born Sept. 27, 1942, in Corsicana, Texas, the son of the late Horace Otha and Nadine (Hobbs) Baldwin. He began his education at Waco High School and left home when he was 17 to enlist in the United States Navy in 1959. From early testing, he was given an appointment to Annapolis. However, during a year of prep school his vision changed enough that he could not attend. Don then served on the destroyer USN Sullivans as a sonarman. During his service, he was involved in the search for the missing ship Thresher and in the Cuban Blockade.

After his discharge from the military in 1963, Don returned to Waco to attend Baylor University to study Geology where he graduated Cum Laude in 1967. He then enrolled in Rice University as a National Science Foundation Fellow, graduating in 1971 with a Masters Degree in Geophysics. He was also published several times nationally.

Don met Pat O'Michael and married May 27, 1967, at the Elizabeth and Robert Barrett Browning Library Chapel on the campus of Baylor University in Waco, Texas. During Don's long career as a leader and mentor with ExxonMobil, he worked and went to the Bering Sea, Stavanger, Norway, the Western Gulf of Mexico and the Greater Midland Texas Basin. He also went to Brazil for four years, Melbourne, Australia, Kuala Lumpur, Kuwait, the Eastern Mediterranean, Chad/Niger in Africa, Wales and London. He also assisted in making other discoveries in several locations throughout the United States.

While living in Rio de Janerio, Brazil, Don and Pat were able to travel to Peru, Morocco, Spain as well as going down the Amazon. Don also worked deep in the Amazon on some very dangerous explorations for oil and gas.

In 2002, Don and Pat retired to the country outside of Crawford, Texas, where he enjoyed collecting guns and knives, target practicing and walking the land which his family purchased for retirement 32 years ago.

At different times in his life, he played the Guitar, the Recorder, and Piano. Using his own darkroom, Don was an accomplished photographer.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Pat Baldwin; a son, Austin Baldwin; a brother, Reginald Baldwin and wife, Janette, of Crawford.

Casketbearers will be Booger De Chaume, Charlie Fitzgerald, Steve Massey, Pedro Rodriquez, Phillip Stewart and James Williams.

For those desiring, the family has suggested Crawford First United Methodist Church for memorial contributions.

Just found out about Don's passing. I worked with Don for over 10 years at ExxonMobil when he was doing regional geology. Don was a great mentor, colleague, gentleman, and above all the model for professional conduct. I want to
