1915-2013 WILLIAMSTOWN Mr. Mark Markarian , 98 of 1080 Simonds Rd. Williamstown, died Wednesday July 24, 2013 at Williamstown Commons.
He was born in Lowell, Mass., on April 11, 1915, son of Asadoor and Anna (Der Hoosigian) Markarian. He graduated from Lowell High School in 1932 and also graduated from the Lowell Textile Institute with high honors and as president of his class.
Mark came to North Adams and worked at Arnold Print Works, where he developed wash resistant paints for improving the flock printing process on cotton and silk. After the start of World War II, he joined the Sprague Electric Co. in its laboratory. As the leader of the laboratory, Mark developed new manufacturing methods and new products that resulted in 40 US patents, including a successful continuous capacitor aging machine, which Sprague put in production in its North Carolina plant. He retired from Sprague in 1979.
In his younger years, Mark enjoyed skiing and fishing the area waters for trout. He also enjoyed bowling.
His wife was the former Anne Marie O'Leary, who died on March 21, 2007. They were married in 1936.
Both his sons were veterans of the Vietnam War. He is survived by his son, Paul Markarian and his wife, Louise of North Adams who were his primary caregivers. He also leaves a grandson Erik Markarian and his wife, Tara of Chelmsford; a brother Haig Markarian of Natick, Mass.; and nieces and nephews. His son Richard Markarian died on October 26, 2008 as a result of an automobile accident.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral for Mark Markarian will be Monday July 29, 2013 at 11 a.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St. North Adams. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery. A calling hour will be held on Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
