Pickett, Rex Levering Jr. Born 5/17/30 in Mpls. - passed peacefully at his home in Apple Valley on 7/29/13. Preceded in death by wife Patricia Ann (Aleshire) in '76. Son of Rex Sr. and Beulah (LaBonte) Pickett. Survived by 7 children, A. Chell Smith, Rhonda Reedy, Rex L. Pickett III, Jennifer Rigsby, Michael (Mary Beth) Pickett, Melissa (Jordian) Weaver, Andrea Pickett (Don) Nelson; 16 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Elizabeth (John) Caye, Barbara (LeRoy) Hoops, Diane (Ron) Kibiger - many nieces and nephews. Rex's extended family of hundreds includes the McChesneys of Mpls, life-long friends from St. Louis Park, the Mpls Writer's Workshop, Cross of Glory golf, Jen's piano gang and countless others whom he touched with inspirational poems and short stories. Rex's life was accentuated by love for family, golf and the U. S. Marine Corps. He earned 14 letters at St. Louis Pk HS where he and friends initiated Lake Conf. hockey and earned a trip to the '48 State Hockey Tourn. He played freshman football at the U and was an award-winning soccer goalie at the US Naval Academy. Rex served on CV 20 USS Bennington as commanding officer of the Marine detachment during the Korean War. He and wife Patricia took pride in their contribution to preserving watersheds and green spaces in Bloomington during the 60s. Rex wrote two books, dozens of poems and attended thousands of youth concerts, plays and athletic events. Following his military career he was an executive in the foodservice industry. Rex's enduring legacy will be a balance of persistent toughness within a thoughtful, caring soul. Memorial service - Sat. 8/10/13 at Brackett's Crossing CC, 17976 Judicial Rd.
