DOUBLE, Robert "Bob," 71, of Midlothian, Va., passed away Thursday, August 15, 2013 after succumbing to his fourth bout with cancer. Bob was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. He graduated from Temple University with a degree in political science. He began his career as a sports reporter in Pennsylvania, though his passion for helping others propelled him to become a volunteer with VISTA, helping the indigent in the Norfolk area of Virginia. Bob then became a supervisor for VISTA. Finally, he became a teacher of the blind, working at the Virginia Department for the Blind and Visually Impaired, where he remained for 32 and a half years before retiring in 2008. Bob was active in the theater and enjoyed participating in radio and one-act plays in Richmond, Va. He was also on the board of directors of the original Firehouse Theater Project. He loved golf and music, and his friends were most important to him. Bob leaves behind his loving wife, Brenda; and darling Japanese Chin puppy, Morti. He is also survived by three stepchildren, two brothers and a niece. Bob was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service will be held at Bon Air Baptist Church on Monday, August 19, 2013 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the or to the Hawthorne Cancer Resource Center.
