Rachel Johnson, 100, formerly of Port Arthur, Texas, departed this life after receiving approximately 27 months of care at IHS-Heritage Place Nursing Home in Mesquite, Texas on Friday, February 18, 2000.
Ms. Johnson celebrated her 100th birthday among family and friends where she was shown admiration with her favorite treats. She was also given a saxophone solo performance of "Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross" performed by Dr. Larry "T-Byrd" Gordon, who also sponsored the event.
After she appeared at her doorstep more than 41 years ago, Ms. Johnson was befriended by Mrs. Sarah Jane Forney, who later became her legal guardian. She resided with Mrs. Forney in Port Arthur, where she helped raise Ms. Forney's children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Her known family left behind include Ms. Forney's four children, Murline Guidry Babineaux-Lacour and David Forney Jr. of Port Arthur, and Carrie Forney and Pauline Forney Smith of Dallas; her three grandchildren, Marlene Guidry Simon and Valerie Babineaux Carter of Dallas, and Charles "Charlie" Babineaux of Port Arthur; and her seven great-grandchildren, William A. Smith, Jerry Babineaux, Damon Babineaux, Christopher Guidry, Davon Guidry, Crescenda Eqwere Smith and Larry Cordon II.
