Anthony Alteri Obituary

1917 - 2003
Franklin, ME & Syracuse, NY—Major Anthony M. Alteri, 85, died at his home in Franklin April 28, 2003. He was born September 20, 1917 at Oswego, NY the son of Francesco and Eugenia (Calvanese) Alteri. Anthony entered the U.S. Army as private prior to WWII and served throughout the war in Panama and the Middle East. During the Korean War he served with the 82nd Airborne and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Korean Service Medal with 5 Bronze Stars during his service there. He continued through the ranks eventually ending his career as a Major in 1959. Following his service in the Army he worked as an Aviation Technician for the FAA at the Hancock Airport in Syracuse for 13 years. After his retirement with the FAA he worked for Emerson Electric for another 11 years finally retiring in 1982. Anthony spent much of his time after retirement with his family enjoying his grandchildren. When he wasn’t with his family he could often be found in his vegetable garden. He was a life member of the V.F.W. in Syracuse. He is survived by his son Michael F. Alteri and his wife Beverly (Archer) and their children, Philip, Andrew and Danielle all of Franklin; two brothers, Louis and his wife Doris of Syracuse and Frank and his wife Susan of Liverpool, NY; one sister Fanny Lumia of Syracuse; a special niece and nephew Richard and Mary Alteri and their boys, Mark, Rick and Joe; several other nieces and nephews. He will also be remembered by close friends Ruth Murphy of Franklin and Shelly and Elena Pelkey of Syracuse. Anthony was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Ethel (Smith) Alteri in 1992; a grandson Michael F. Alteri, Jr. 1984, three brothers, Giuseppe, Joseph and Michael and one sister, Mary Tucci. Friends are invited to visit with the family 4 to 7 PM, Thursday the Pirro and Sons Funeral Home, 514 Turtle St. Syracuse. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 12:00 PM, Friday at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Syracuse. Interment will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Syracuse. A memorial service will be held 6:00 PM, Saturday, May 10 at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 215 Main St. Ellsworth.
