Francis T. LaBounty, 94 of Enfield died on Friday at his home in Enfield. He was born in East Albany, VT on February 16, 1913 a son of the late Joseph and Sadie (Dion) LaBounty. He grew up in Vermont working on dairy farms at a young age. He was married to Irene Adams in 1936 and they made their home in Rutland, Lebanon, Enfield Center, and for over 60 years in Enfield. Mrs. LaBounty died in 1988. Francis served as the Chief of Police in Enfield for thirty years retiring in 1978. He received the Lebanon Lodge of Elks citizen of the year award in 1968. He was a member of the Hartford Elks Lodge, Enfield Lions Club, Enfield Outing Club, New Hampshire Chiefs of Police Association, National Rifle Association, and served as a hunter safety instructor and rifle shooting instructor for several years. He was Mascoma Lake’s marine officer for several years and was a police officer at Dartmouth Football games for over thirty years and missed only one home game during that time span. Chief LaBounty was instrumental in the establishment of Shacoma Beach on Mascoma Lake in Enfield.
He drove school bus for the town of Enfield for 10 years and many of the children knew him as “Uncle Francis”. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed skiing. He took pride in the fact that he mowed his lawn with his garden tractor until he was ninety three.
He is survived by four children; Helen Wolfel of Barre, VT, Roland “Skip” LaBounty of Florida, Matthew LaBounty of Enfield, Roberta Mason of Canaan; 14 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; sisters Pearl Cilbrith of Lebanon, Dorothea Dunham of Lebanon, Mary Bean of White River Jct, VT; brother Donald LaBounty of Enfield; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter Lurlene LaBounty; a son Theodore LaBounty; brothers Harold, Nelson, and Theodore LaBounty; and a sister Lela Mitton.
Friends and family may call at the Ricker Funeral Home in Enfield on Tuesday evening June 26th from 6 to 8. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11:00Am at the LaSalette Shrine Chapel in Enfield. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Lebanon.
