Garfield Thurman "Gary" Carter Garfield Thurman "Gary" Carter, 88, of Bridgewater, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, August 14, 2010, at Avante at Harrisonburg.
He was born in Sherando, Virginia, on September 19, 1921, a son of the late Robert and Nettie Mae (Patterson) Carter.
Gary was a mechanic at Merchants Tire where he retired in 2001. He served in the United States Navy from 1942 until 1945, and did three convoy trips on the USS Herbert and the USS Texas on D-Day.
He was united in marriage on September 22, 1945, to Agnes A. (Marr) Carter, of Bridgewater, who survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife is a son, Robert E. Carter of Bridgewater; a daughter, Jill Phillips of Weyers Cave; four sisters, Edith Carter of South Coffyville, Oklahoma, Manola Summer and her husband, Emmett, of Waynesboro, Onie Littek of Stuarts Draft, Jean Crouch and her husband, Floyd, of Ohio; one brother, Wilbur Carter of Lyndhurst; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters, Halcie Haynes, Racie Campbell, Clyde Carter, Bobby Carter and Ann Moniyham.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at Dayton Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 17, 2010, at the Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater.
