Gerald Abernathy, age 58, of Mount Ida, died Wednesday, November 6, 2002.
He was born on July 30, 1944 near Oden, the son of Ottis Abernathy and Almeda Tarkinton Abernathy. On November 21, 1965, he was married to Alma Brewer. He was preceded in death by one brother, Orlin Abernathy.
He was the owner and operator of Gerald Abernathy Backhoe and Dozer and ABC Ready Mix. He was a member of the Lake Ouachita Baptist Church and served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He was past president and a current member of the South Fork Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife, Alma Abernathy of Mount Ida; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dwight Abernathy, Brian and Tory Abernathy, and Chad and Roxanne Abernathy all of Mount Ida; three grandchildren, Tate Abernathy, Cassidy Abernathy, and Ty Abernathy; his parents, Ottis and Almeda Abernathy of Mount Ida; one brother, Loyal Abernathy of Mount Ida; two sisters, Norma Jean Breashears, and Edith Young both of Mount Ida; and several nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be held on Friday, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, in the Lake Ouachita Baptist Church sanctuary.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 9, 2002 in the Lake Ouachita Baptist Church with the Revs. Roy Brooks and Ronnie Noles officiating.
Interment will be in the Mount Olive Cemetery near Oden under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Wagoner, Brian Demby, Kerry Strasner, Orville Wagoner, Joey Powell, and Chris Hill.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Mount Ida Volunteer Fire Department and First Responders; customers, contractors, and employees of Gerald Abernathy Backhoe and Dozer and ABC Ready Mix; Joe Baldwin; and Anthony Lewis.
