Micro, NC- Helene Ibey Chapman, 77, passed away peacefully February 21st, 2010 of complications of Alzheimer’s disease. She was born October 10, 1932 in Lebanon, NH, one of the first children born at Alice Peck Day Hospital. The daughter of Daniel and Gladys (Arnold) Ibey, she was raised in Enfield, graduating from Enfield High School in 1950.
On October 14, 1950, she married her true love, Angus “Sunny” Chapman. They lived in Enfield for several years prior to moving to Canaan in 1963. In the early years of marriage she was primarily a homemaker, making home baked goods for sale in the neighborhood as a means of helping support the family. She enjoyed her hobbies, primarily knitting and other crafts, particularly as gifts to family that always had a ‘Helene’ uniqueness to them, her visits to New Hampshire to spend time with her many friends and family, and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, particularly at the family’s annual beach trip.
Helene was often considered a woman ‘ahead of her time’. In the early 1970’s she chose a formal career path, returning to college and receiving her degree from The Community College of Vermont in 1978. Professionally, her passion was service to the elderly. She was Director of the Upper Valley Senior Citizen Center, Director and a founding member of Advance Transit, and finally with Vermont Public Transportation Association until her retirement in 1994.
In 1994, “Sunny” and Helene relocated to Micro, North Carolina to escape the harsh winters, yet remain near some of their children.
Helene was predeceased by her loving husband Angus in 2007, her parents, and her sole brother Tom in 2009.
Survivors include their four children; daughters Raylene (Richard) Buttry of Clayton, NC, Rose (Mike) Johnson of Knightdale, NC, Patricia (Donald) Butterfield of Canaan, and son Angus Chapman Jr. of Clayton, NC; seven grandchildren; Jonathan and Melissa Bordfeld, Lance, Timothy and Molly Johnson, Angus Chapman III, and Keely Alafat; and four great grandchildren; Isaac, Nicolas and Lydia Helene Bordfeld and Adrian Angus Chapman.
The family will receive guests from 6-8 pm at Ricker Funeral Home in Enfield on Friday, February 26, 2010. A funeral service will be at 1 PM at St. Helena’s Catholic Church in Enfield on Saturday, February 27, 2010.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Helene’s name to Advance Transit, Attn: Van Chestnut, PO Box 1027, Wilder, VT 05088.
