Joseph A. Alpedo
1916 - 2010
Joseph A. Alpedo of Reading died at his home on February 24, 2010. He was 93. Born in Reading on August 30, 1916 he was the son of Joseph and Provencia (Dogata) Alpedo. For a short time Joe lived in Woburn and attended the Woburn Public Schools. After school he was employed for 12 years by the Winchester Brick Co. in Winchester. In February of 1943 he enlisted into the United States Army. He was shipped to Europe and for 28 months served with the 104th Infantry, 20th Division in Northern and Southern France for which he received Battle Stars and the Purple Heart. During his time in the service his job was to operate, service and maintain heavy equipment which hauled personnel, equipment and supplies for organization. Upon his discharge he went back to work for the Winchester Brick Co. where he met his wife, Dorothy. In 1951 he returned to Reading where he always felt he was a life long resident. For 25 years he owned and operated the Reading Disposal Co. He was a member of St. Agnes Church and a life member of the Brotherhood and Paternal Organization of Elks in Wakefield. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1031 and a member of the American Legion Post #52 both in Reading.

Joe was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy M. (Rafter), devoted father of Joanne Thompson and her husband Donald of Vero Beach, FL. Cherished brother of Sally Butler and Rose Cleveland both of Stoneham and Lenora Luongo of Zephyr Hills, FL and the late Sam Alpedo. He also leaves his dear friend Maureen Barry of Reading. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, March 1 at 11 am at the Douglass, Edgerley and Bessom Funeral Home 25 Sanborn St. (corner of Woburn St.) Reading. Relatives and friends invited to attend. Friends and family may call at the funeral home on Sunday, 3-7. Burial in Calvary Cemetery, Winchester. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Joe’s memory to the VNA of Middlesex East and Visiting Nurse Hospice 607 North Ave. Suite 17 Wakefield, MA 01880.
