WEST COLUMBIA—Graveside services for Lewis “Possum” Allen Whetsell, 60, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2007, with Masonic Rites. Officiating will be Rev. Kermit Schrader. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday evening at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to Jamil Hospital, Relation Unit, P.O. Box 210578, Columbia, SC 29221-0578.
Mr. Whetsell passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2007. Born in Dorchester, he was the son of the late Samuel D. and Lillie Hammond Whetsell. Formerly from Dorchester he has been an area reside since 1952, a member of Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church, and a United States Marine Veteran. Mr. Whetsell retired from the Farm Bureau Insurance which he was very active. He served as Chairman of the Florence ICAR Committee (Inner Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repairs); Chairman of the SC ICAR Committee; Chairman of the SC Auto Body Skills Competition; and a member of the SC Vocational-Technical Advisory Board. He was very active in both the Masons and Shriners; he served over 25 years in the Masons and over 20 years in Shriners. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather; he will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Surviving are his wife, Lynn Owens Whetsell of West Columbia; daughters, Mandy Neff and her husband, Scott of Lexington, Candy McGee of West Columbia; four grandchildren, Andrew Neff, Paige Neff, Chris McGee, and T. J. Wages; sister and brother-in-law, Patsy and Al Fulmer of Lexington, uncle, Otis Whetsell of North Charleston, aunts, Elise Cohen, Florida, Ruby Ditmer and Jane Hammond both of Columbia; numerous cousins.
