Manuel J. Araujo, 87, of East Street, Attleboro, a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed Sunday, December 26, 2010 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, Rhode Island. He was the beloved husband of Senhorinha (Araujo) Araujo of Attleboro.
Born in St. Michael, Azores on October 27, 1923, he was a son of the late Antonio and Maria (Melo) Araujo. Manuel lived in Brazil for fourteen years, and later immigrated to the United States in 1968.
Manuel retired from the former Englehard Corporation after many years of service. He also worked part time for Sturdy Memorial Hospital after retirement, and was a member of the Portuguese American Club in Attleboro. Manuel’s home at the corner of North Avenue and Paulette Lane in Attleboro became known as “Mini La Salette”. Many people would drive by and stop to appreciate his Christmas light creations every year. He truly loved La Salette and was inspired by his many visits.
In addition to his wife Senhorinha, Manuel is survived by five children: Lucia M. Hantash of Attleboro, Maria Helena DaCosta of Attleboro, Mario J. Araujo of Attleboro, Zelia DoVale of East Providence, and Paulo J. Araujo of Attleboro, two sisters: Maria Hilda Pavao of Attleboro, and Maria Jose Santos of Attleboro, nine grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late Henrique Araujo.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, 20 Peck Street, Attleboro where the Araujo family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 29th from 6 – 8 PM. A funeral will be conducted on Thursday, December 30th at 9:30 AM from the Duffy-Poule Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM in Holy Ghost Church, 71 Linden Street, Attleboro, celebrated by the Rev. John Murray, Pastor. Manuel will be laid to rest in St. John’s Cemetery, Attleboro.
