Marie C. (Schneider) Adams, 93, died Sept. 24, 2008, after complications following a broken hip.
She was born June 2, 1915, to Frank and Margaret Schneider. She graduated from Ravenna High School in 1933 and Bohecker’s Business College in 1934, where she was taught by Mrs. Bohecker herself. Adams began her career working for the Portage County Welfare Department.
During World War II, she worked at the Ravenna Ordinance Plant putting gunpowder in shells.
The last 23 years of her career were spent as the clerk of the Portage County commissioners where she ran day-to-day operations. The Record-Courier featured Adams in an article titled “Marie’s a Rock of Gibraltar in County Courthouse” after she had worked there for 20 years.
“She is more expert on all phases of county government than almost any other official,” it said. In addition, it described her as an “efficient administrator, courthouse trouble-shooter, confidant of officials and employees, expert on county government, a stickler for detail, devotedly loyal to her job and unruffled by a raging official or irate citizen.” A separate article in the Akron Beacon Journal, also featuring Adams, noted she was likely the first woman to serve as county clerk. In addition, Adams was affectionately referred to as the county’s “fourth commissioner” because even commissioners agreed that she was the backbone of their office.
Adams was the past president of the Ravenna Business and Professional Women’s Club and Crystal City Women’s Bowling League and also a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Frank D. (Susanne) Adams of Dayton; daughter-in-law, Wilma L. Adams of Ravenna, Ohio; sister, Dorothy Haas of Sanford, N.C.; brother, O.J. (Joann) Schneider of Brimfield; five grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Adams; her son, Robert T. Adams; and brothers, Herbert F. Schneider, Leo A. Schneider, and Wilbur J. Schneider.
Calling hours will be held 7-9PM Sunday, September 28th at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Funeral services will be held 11:00AM Monday, September 29th at Immaculate Conception Church with Father John-Michael LaVelle officiating. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.
