Dr. Stanley Carlyle Alford WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. - Dr. Stanley Carlyle Alford, 88, died on Monday, August 26, 2013 at Providence Heart Institute in Columbia, S. C. Stanley was born June 29, 1925 in Mullins, S. C., the son William and Mattie Smith Alford. He was a lifelong educator, accomplished artist and pianist. He graduated from Mullins high School in 1942. He attended the University of South Carolina for a year and half before being drafted into the army. He served two and a half years in the South Pacific and Philippines during World War II as an army medic. He then returned to the University of South Carolina, graduating in 1949 with a B. S. in Biology and Chemistry and in 1955 with an M.Ed. He began his teaching career in S. C. in 1949 teaching Biology, Chemistry and Physics for almost 30 years. He taught in Walterboro, S. C., at Brookland Cayce High School in Cayce, S.C., and at NorthWood High School in Montgomery County, Maryland. While in Maryland he furthered his education at The School of Education of The George Washington University. In January 1976 he received his Doctor of Education degree with his dissertation titled "The Historical Development of Hagerstown Junior College: 1946 to 1975". He retired from teaching in 1978 and resided in West Columbia, S. C. Nothing defined his life more than his generosity and devotion to his family. He was predeceased by Brothers, Jerome Alford, Herbert Alford, Frank Alford, Chessie Alford, Neil Alford and Sisters, Dorothy Cornett, Mildred Byrd and Virginia Alford. Surviving are sisters in law Marie Alford, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Faye Alford, Surfside Beach, S. C.; and Ruth Alford, Marietta, GA.: and many nieces and nephews; Cindy Watson, West Watson, Mattie Watson, Linda Black (John), Eddie Byrd of Columbia, S.C.; Billy Alford (Dawn), Randy Alford, Wells Alford of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Kay Brown, Jesse Brown (Camisha), Chip Alford (Lynn), Matt Alford of Surfside Beach, S.C.; Frank Alford (Bettie) of Florence, S.C.; Jerry Alford (Sharon) , Winter Springs , FLA., Debbie Alford, Marietta, GA; Dorothy Ann Hatcher, Aiken, S.C., Natalie Temples (Brett), GA.; Daniele Nagy (Dave), NY. Services celebrating Stanley's life will be held on Saturday, August 31 at 12PM at Cox-Collins Funeral Home Chapel in Mullins, S.C., with burial to follow at Smith Cemetery. Family will receive friends following the service at the Mattie Smith Alford Farm.
