Vincenza Balistreri Obituary

1928 - 2011
Vincenza Balistreri, 82, of Independence, Missouri was received by the angels on September 3, 2011 from her home after a long battle with Alzheimer. She was born September 22, 1928 to Baldassare and Olga (Michelia) Russo in Licata, Sicily. There she met her husband, Angelo and had a blessed marriage for 54 years. In 1963 she moved to the United States with her husband and 2 children. Even though she called Independence her home, her heart was always back in her home town of Sicily. She will always be remembered for her upbeat personality and her love that she gave to her family. She cherished her Sunday dinners with family and her prayers to God. Vincenza is survived by her 2 children, Gaetano and wife Carol Balistreri of Independence, Josephine and husband Ernie Scarborough of Bates City, Mo. She had 2 grandchildren, Angelo and Nathan Balistreri, both of Independence, Mo and 2 step-grandchildren, Randy of Lee's Summit, Mo and Robbie Scarborough of Smithville, Mo. She had 2 great-grandchildren, Vincent Gaetano and Nicoli John Balistreri and 4 step-great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Meredith, Ruby and Jozey Scarborough. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Crossroads Hospice Memorial Fund, 9237 Ward Parkway, Suite 300, Kansas City, MO 64114. Graveside services will be Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. in New Salem Cemetery, Independence, Mo. The family would like to express a warm thank you to all of our friends and care givers who have supported and understood our difficult and sometimes humorous times in dealing with such a life altering disease. Mom will be missed deeply by her family. We leave mom with this poem, until we meet again; We watched you as your memory began to fade away- We watched you as your mind itself slipped, piece by piece, away- We watched your frame diminishing, as every organ failed- We watched you as your body fought against its last exhale We cried until our tears themselves revealed God's love within- We understood, and knew, why God took Her to be with Him. Now hope arises in our hearts-calm assurance when we pray- As our eyes continue watching We will see them, Both, one day And every night when we look up and see a certain star.. We will know within our hearts exactly where you are. So on this day we say good-bye as you now depart Although far from our touch, you're never far from our hearts.
