William Aguiar Obituary

1949 - 2007
PITTSFIELD -- William M. Aguiar, 58, died Dec. 14, 2007 at home. He was the husband of Carol (Gardella) Aguiar.

Born in Fall River on Jan. 14, 1949, he was the son of Deolinda (Farias) Aguiar of Tiverton and the late William Aguiar. He graduated from Durfee High School in 1966. He received a bachelor's degree in business from Roger Williams College in 1974. He received an associate’s degree in nursing from Berkshire Community College in 1999. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, serving four years as an electronics technician with duty stations at Naval Air Station Fallon, Fallon Nevada, and aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Constellation.

Mr. Aguiar was employed as a registered nurse by Berkshire Medical Center, where he worked in the surgical unit, and later, oncology. Before that, he was a district manager for Hills department stores in the Buffalo, N.Y. and Rochester, N.Y., area. He relocated to Pittsfield in 1990 as the general manager of the Berkshire Mall store.

He was a former member of the board of directors for Pittsfield Community Television and had also served as president. He was a gardener, and produced several seasons of "The Backyard Gardener" at the station. He maintained gardens for several years at Canoe Meadows and was known for his morning glories. An airplane modeler since his youth, he was a member of Wings and Wheels and International Plastic Modelers Society of Springfield. His work, along with others from the club, is on permanent display as part of the World War I exhibit at the New England Air Museum. He was a fan of the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics.

Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Aguiar leaves three brothers, Robert, Kenneth and David Aguiar, all of Tiverton; two sisters, Beverly O'Brien and Carol Pereira, both of Tiverton. He . also leaves his brother-in-law and caregiver, Peter D. Gardella, and his mother-in-law, Genevieve C. Gardella of Fall River, with whom he shared his love of history and reading. He also leaves many other in-laws, nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service to celebrate the life of William M. Aguiar, who died Friday, Dec. 14, 2007, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008 at POCASSET-MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME 462 Main Rd, Tiverton, RI with calling hours starting at 9 a.m. to the time of the service.
