SANFORD Thomas Mitchel Haislip Sr., 85, of Sanford, North Carolina, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 3, at First Baptist Church. A graveside service will be held following the funeral at Buffalo Cemetery.
Tom was born August 4, 1923, in Oak City, North Carolina, son of Robert A. Haislip, Sr. and Zenobia Cox Haislip. He grew up on the family farm in Martin County with his five siblings. His early life on the farm was a strong influence and encouraged him to create his own "Lightwood Farm" later in life. He graduated with a BS in Animal Science from North Carolina State College in 1946. He was the retired Lee County Agricultural Extension Chairman, a position he held from 1964 through 1980. Prior to that he served from 1946 to 1964 as the Alamance County Agricultural Extension agent. In 1972, Tom was presented the Distinguished Service award for long and efficient service to the agricultural industry by the National Association of County Agricultural Agents. He was privileged to be associated with many organizations including the North Carolina Cattleman's Association, the NCSU Alumni Association and the Wolfpack Club, Farm Bureau of Lee County, and the Sanford Rotary Club. He also volunteered his services to the Lee County Red Cross. Since 1964 Tom has been a dedicated member of First Baptist Church. Grandy as he was known by family and friends loved sports and especially baseball and football.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Simpson Haislip.
He is survived by his daughter, Brooks Haislip Gage and grandson, Benjamin Haislip Gage; and his son, Thomas Mitchel Haislip, Jr., daughter-in-law, Vicki Oldham Haislip and grandson, Thomas Brooks Haislip of Charlotte and granddaughter, Alex Victoria Haislip. He is survived by sisters, Nancy Walters of Greenville, Ruth Roberson and husband, Russell Roberson of Durham, Lynnette Bowers and husband, Bob Bowers of Bethel, and a brother, Bryan Haislip of Tarboro. Additionally, he is survived by 14 nieces and nephews, long time friends, Bob Brickhouse and Virginia Hester and special friends, Dee and Don Zimmerman, Sherry and Michael Klingman, Carolyn Bowman, Bell Ayres, Melissa Thomas, and Rhonda and Randy Hepner.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert A. Haislip Sr. and brother- in-law, Jim Walters and sister-in-law, Mary Allen Haislip.
The family will receive friends and family at Miller- Boles funeral home from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, and at other times at the home of Tom and Vicki Haislip at 2307 Rockwood Drive.
