Joey Alfonso CHARLOTTE Joey Alfonso, 22, of Hickory, and a senior at UNC-Greensboro, died accidentally Saturday, July 14, while hiking in Burke County. He was born April 9, 1990 in Terre Haute, Ind., a son of Elioberto P. "Al" Alfonso, and Suzi Martin Alfonso. Joey was a 2008 graduate of Hickory High School, where he was an accomplished wrestler, including most valuable player for wrestling for all four years of high school, he was a representative for the N.C. National team and a regional champion for all four years. The Alfonso family will greet friends from 6 to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 18, at Hickory Funeral Home. A service to celebrate the life of Joey will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, July 19, from the sanctuary of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 52 16 Ave., NW, Hickory, with the Rev. Mark Andrews, Senior Minister, officiating. Bur-ial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park. Joey is survived by his parents, Eliberto P. "Al" and Suzi Alfonso, of Hickory; brother, Chris Smith and wife, Eva Ryker, of Charlotte,; sister, Shannon Mann-Alvarenga and husband, Joel, of Hickory; niece, Isabella Mann; paternal grandmother, Ernestina Alfonso, of Orlando, Fla.; and maternal grand-parents, Joe and Sharon Farris, of Varna, Ill.
