Gehring, Virgil Robert Age 82 of Eagan, originally of Waseca, MN, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013 after facing cancer with humility and fortitude. Virg and his wife Farolyn have lived in Eagan for the past 48 years where they have been active members of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. For 30 years he was known as Mr. Gehring to his many Geography and Social Studies students, as well as the many athletes he coached. He started his professional career in the towns of Hayfield, Lake Lillian, and Raymond before teaching an additional 23 years in the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage district. After serving in the Army during the Korean War, he received a BA from Augsburg College and a Masters from Mankato State. At Augsburg, Virg played center on the basketball team and remained active in the A-Club. He treasured summers at the cabin on Big Bass Lake in Akeley, MN and camping with his family. Virg and Farolyn enjoyed numerous Elderhostels around the country, visiting 47 U.S. states and seven Canadian provinces. After retirement, Virg volunteered with several organizations, including DARTS and SeAM. In every experience and endeavor, Virg made life-long friends and memories. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur H. and Emilie (Behr) Gehring; brothers, Orville and Lyle Gehring; and sisters, Shirley Thissen and Luverne Krueger. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Farolyn of Eagan; son, Karl (Genesis) of Denver, CO, daughter, Amy Gehring of Bloomington, MN and son, Dale (Angie) of Northfield, MN and their children, Dylan and Jaida Gehring. Also survived by brothers, Emery (Lillian) of Waseca, MN, Marlin of Waseca, Ronald (Marlene) of Mound, MN, Gerald (Alice) of Oakdale, MN and Kenneth of Aztec, NM; sisters, Edna Korman of Waseca, Velma Lohmann of Alto, MI and Norma Stone of Waseca; brother-in-law, Arlan (Phyllis) Johnson; 24 nieces and nephews; many other family members and friends. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held at 11 AM Monday, June 24th at MT. CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 3930 Rahn Road, Eagan with a gathering 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Virg's family would like to extend many thanks to the staff at Fairview Hospice, Northfield Hospice, Three Links Care Center and most especially the physical therapists at the Veterans Administration for keeping our dad on his feet for the last years of his life.
