Dwight Smith Atkins, Sr., 98, of Millport, AL passed away October 14, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-GT, Columbus, MS.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 17, 2006 from 12:00 - 2:00 pm. at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Lowndes Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Ferrell McCullough and Bro. Robert Huffman officiating. Interment will be in Springhill Cemetery, Millport, AL. with Lowndes Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Atkins was born February 5, 1908 in Lamar Co, AL to the late Jessie Lee and Bessie Mae Smith Atkins, and had lived most of his life in this area. He had been self-employed as a farmer for 60 years, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mr. Atkins is preceded in death by a daughter, Sara Atkins; brothers, Mayo H. Atkins, Theron L. Atkins, J. B. Atkins, Lynn Kermit Atkins.

Mr. Atkins is survived by his wife of 64 years, Maudine Odom Atkins, Millport, AL; sons, Dwight Atkins, Jr., Millport, AL, Charles E. (Nelda) Atkins, Columbus, MS, Luther (Lorraine) Atkins, Columbus, MS, John L. Atkins, Millport, AL; daughters, Winna (Earnest) Whitten, Millport, AL, and Nancy (Mike) Cash, Tupelo, MS; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Toby Atkins, Terry Atkins, Byron Whitten, Danny Cash, and Drew Cash.

Honorary pallbearers will be Earnest Whitten, Clyde Sansing, Craig Sansing, David Alridge, Larry Robertson.

Memorials may be sent to the South Lamar Rescue squad, 1424 Hwy. 96, Millport, AL 35576.
