Louisa Assaff, 96, well known Newport business woman of 487 East Main Street,Newport died peacefully June 20, 2007 at her great nephews (Michael John Ghosn) home in Troy. He and his wife Chelsea had been taking care of Louisa for the past four months. She was born July 16, 1910 in Lebanon a daughter of Tonious and Stocia (Alfense) Ghosn. In 1931 she married Lewis Assaff who predeceased her in 1951. Mrs.Assaff owned and operated Louisa Assaff Store for over fifty years. She was on the cover of the Enquirer magazine for fending off a robber in her store a few years ago and she received an award for bravery from the Newport Police Department. She was admired by many for her work ethic and dedication to her landmark store. She had many brothers and sisters who predeceased her. She is survived by the following family members: a nephew, John Michael Ghosn and his wife Deborah of Sydney, Australia, great nephews, Michael John Ghosn and wife Chelsea of Troy, Michael Essaff of Newport, Paul Essaff and his wife Linda of St. Johnsbury, Roland Essaff and his wife Emily of Tennesee , David Essaff and his wife Ellen of Reno,Nevada , and by a niece, Gertrude Essaff of Newport, Gail Eileen Smith and her husband Jack of Sydney,Australia, and great nieces, Karen Ghosn of Sydney, Australia, Lisa Stephens and her husband Craig of Brisbane,Australia, Joanne Anderson and her husband Jack of Texas, , Diane Essaff of Newport, Carol Sanville and her husband John of Coventry, and several great great nieces and nephews. She also has many other family members that reside in her native Country of Lebanon. She was predeceased by a nephew Louie John Essaff.

Wednesday June 27, 2007 at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Road, Newport.Family and Friends may also call from 9:00 A.M. until 10:30 A.M. on Thursday June 28,2007 at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday June 28, 2007 at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport with the Rev. Yvon Royer celebrating a mass of christian burial. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
