Sarah Virginia Lear Burd, 87, of Frederick, Maryland formerly of Blairsville, PA died on Thursday, April 3, 2003 in The Kline Hospice House, Frederick, Maryland.
She was born January 29, 1916 in Blairsville, PA, a daughter of John Alfred and Mary Elsie Baker Lear.
She spent all her life except the past three years in the Blairsville area. Prior to moving to Frederick, MD, she lived at Villa Angela, Greensburg, PA.
Mrs. Burd was a member of SS Simon & Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville, PA for sixty-seven years and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the America, Court St. Theresa #562 for over fifty years. She was a Sunday school teacher for over twenty years, served on the Health Ministry Parish Council and was an Eucharistic Minister. She received a Papal blessing from Pope John II for her eighty-fifth birthday. She and her husband, Tom created interfaith 55 and Over Club in Blairsville, PA.
She is survived by four daughters, Anna Marie Oberdick and her husband, Earl, Tucson, AZ; Agnes E. Dezzutti and her husband, Phillip, Vandergrift, PA; Evelyn T. Havrilla and her husband, Joseph, Latrobe, PA and Nancy J. Marron and her husband, Ted, Frederick, MD; two sons, Thomas J. Burd and his wife, Sarah “Sally” and Ralph S. Burd and his wife, Barbara, both of Eastlake, Ohio; 17 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; beloved sister-in-law, Muriel Burd; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She married Thomas Charles Burd on August 15, 1935 at SS Simon & Jude Parish, Blairsville, PA. He preceded her in death on August 3, 1982; also preceded in death by parents; a great grandson; two brothers, Richard B. Lear and John M. Lear and a sister, Mary Katherine Clevenger.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at the Shoemaker Funeral Home, Inc. 49 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, PA. where a Wake service will be held on Tuesday at 8:30 P.M. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00 A.M. in the SS Simon & Jude R.C., Blairsville, PA with Fr. Chester J. Raimer as celebrant.
Interment will follow in the SS Simon & Jude Cemetery, Blairsville, PA.
The Rosary will be recited in the funeral home on Tuesday at 3:00 P.M.
