Sad to find Hy had passed away..
Went to St. Alice's Dance, Upper Darby, PA and always had a great time. Johnny and I entered the dance contest and won to be on the HyLit Show on Channel 48.
WIBG was the best Radio station in the 60's for me.
Fabulous memories!

Our band played at Hy’s club “The Manor” in Prospect Park Pa in ‘68. So much fun and a great crowd of kids. Great memories for me and our band Deacon and the Undertakers.
RIP Hyskie.

Hy, You were the best! My sister and I made sure to get the Top 99 Songs of the week at our local record store in Camden, NJ. We both had measles at the same time one summer and we spent 5 days isolated in our bedroom ticking the songs played on WIBG off the list! A great shared memory. Rock on in Peace. To Hy's Family...this July will be our 20th wedding anniversay. We met at the Woodbine Inn and Hy was DJing that night. He played "By Love Possessed", we danced to the song and have been in love ever since.....as much as Hy loved all of his fans, the music and the business. God has truly blessed all of us with his presence and the memories.

Today I found out about your dad's passing. There are no words to express how saddened I was about this terrible tragedy. My prayers and thoughts are with you, Sam and your entire family. Please know though, your father brought so much into the lives of so many that he will never be forgotten. Think of it this way. All of us still left here on earth will be playing the music he made so famous and those in heaven with him are playing it there. Know that he will always be in our hearts and in the music.

Sam, I am so sorry to hear about your dad. I just found out. Something told me tonight to look you up. I had no idea. I am living in Florida and don't get Philly news. Your dad was also an insperation for me. A great man, dad, and a terrific broadcaster. I remember how he would call you every day when he was working with the Globe Trotters. Hy Lit was Philly Radio. He will be missed.

To Hy Lit, the master of radio, our escape from the everyday grind. HYSKIE took us away from the boring daily blah with his career at WIBG and all he did subsequently. He was the PhD of broadcasting great music. Sad to lose you so suddenly. Gone but never forgotten! My deepest sympathy to the family. He was one of kind and the best at what he did in my honest opinion!

Sincerely,

It's funny how some people get my tears.
Growing up in Cherry Hill wouldn't have been the same without The HYSKI.
He later went with me, on tape, to the far reaches of the North Atlantic on the Flagship of the Submarine Force. With him it felt like I was hangin' out at Gino's or the Earlton Bowl. Made some long days peaceful days. RIP, my man, and thanks for being the only part of my life that was innocent.

Mary Anderson

December 16, 2007

I grew up listening to your music in the late 60's every Sunday night until I moved to New York, then, when I'd return to the Philadelpia area I would listn to your broadcast driving back to New York until I reached Exit 7A on The New Jersey Turnpike, then the radio station would fade in and out until you were gone. After New York I moved to Atlanta, Ga., still unable to find someone like you. RIP

I can't believe that I just learned about Hy's passing yesterday through an e-mail I received about a web site he wanted his fans to know about. Just like him to remember us! I was really saddened and shocked. Now, living far away from the WIBG area and days, I was finally able to listen again through a friend.

It is such a terrible loss to the family. I am so sorry, but just think of all the feet that will now be dancing again.

Like many who have signed this book, I grew up in the 60s listening to Hy on WIBG. I regularly attended his record hops. What crowds and what great times. The shows at the Airport Drive-in were great. The most memorable for me was the appearance by Stevie Wonder. I can still hear the crowd's reaction calling out "Little Ray" as he was helped off the stage. Their predictions proved to be accurate.

It seems as if it was only yesterday that I was driving down MacDade Blvd listening to Hy Lit on a summer Saturday night. Great times, great memories, great music and a great DJ.

I've moved from the Philadelphia area and when my sister told me about Hyski's passing I was very upset. What a huge part of our growing up and so much fun. My 40th reunion was in May and one of the ladies graciously prepared a CD with a Hy Lit broadcast on it. What great memories. Condolences to the family on the loss of a giant to many of a certain age in Philadelphia and beyond.

November 28, 2007

I grew up just a short distance from Hy and went to school with Sam. My sister Pam & I would walk down to their house where Sam would give us a bunch of 45's, obviously from his dad. We would fill up those old 45 cases and take them home and listen all day and night. We discovered groups like Sly & the Family Stone, the Motown greats and so much more through those records and his radio show on WIBG. Even in my early youth, I saw Sam's great fondness for his father, his hero. I offer my condolences to the Lit family and all who love Hy.

Hy--
It was an honor and a privilege to be your lantsman. We shared lots of great stories over the years--funny, ironic, prophetic, gossipy, even a few sad ones. The saddest one of all is your spirit is gone but, fortunately, your voice will live on forever. After all, you really did bring the sound to town. My deepest condolences to your family.

Sam & Family:

You have my most heartfelt condolences on the loss of Hyski which will be felt by all who knew him.

I enjoyed working with him during his stay in Atlantic City with WUSS and bumping into him when he toured with the Globe Trotter. He will be missed by many as evidenced by the comments of the people in this guest book. Hyski was a colorful off the air as he was on.

Preserve the memories.

Growing up in philly during the early 60s'my dial was locked in to 99 WIBG. There was great jocks, but
none had the voice, delivery and charisma of HYSKI. He knew the nusic heart & soul. Later when I broke into radio during the 80's, Hy was my insperation, and once had
the honor to do a phoner with him
when I worked at WSPI FM in 1989.
Hyski personified personality radio, and I will miss him.

November 23, 2007

November 22, 2007

I met and interviewed Hy about three years ago. Over the short years, we kept in touch and talked often on the phone. Hy was an extraordiary man. He was honest, sincere, warm, and generous with his feelings. He shared his concern for others. Along with that incredible voice, he could wield a tale and drop a punchline along with the best of them. He had a sense of humor and a handle on life's ironies. To my mind, he lived life as it should be -- every day to its fullest.

He will always be on my mind and in my heart.

My deepest sympathies go out to the family. Hyski was the first disc jockey I ever heard when I discovered WIBG and rock 'n roll in 1959 at the age of 10. I'd listen to him in bed on my little transistor radio under the covers after I was supposed to be sleeping - totally mesmerized by his rapid fire delivery. I'd never heard anything like it. He was my favorite and nobody ever surpassed him. I'll miss you babycakes.

Henry Chmielefski

November 21, 2007

To the family, my deepest sympathies. Hyski was a hero throughout my life and an all time favorite. I enjoyed listening to him on Wibbage through Sunni 104.5 (where I was thrilled to find him again!) through WOGL and HyLitRadio.com. He will be missed, but I do find myself smiling when I think about him. Thank you again for sharing him with all of us.

I was fortunate to meet Mr. Lit years ago through his wife Maggie. I feel lucky that I was able to get to know the two of them. I know their together now in Rock and Roll Haven. God called THE BEST DJ home. Thank you for all your kind words and that warm smile.

Donna Maglione

November 20, 2007

When I received a transistor radio as a very young teen it didn't take me long to tune into the coolest radio station, WIBG. When Hy Lit played "Transistor Sister" I thought it was written and played for me. My husband also from the Philly area loved the whole Philadelphia radio scene. In fact he taught our kids so much about that pop culture that our son is a DJ in Virginia. One time when we were visiting family in Philly my husband took our son to Geno's in South Philly for a real steak. All of a sudden, there was Hy Lit stopping for his taste of Philly too. Now I am a middle aged women preparing Thanksgiving dinner for a family. Still all those memories of growing up in Philly and my daily dose of Hy Lit are with me. I wonder if he ever knew just how many kids lives he impacted with pure joy. Love and blessings to all of his family and friends. Donna Maglione

I shall add a flowering plant to my memory garden in your name. Thanks for so many memories and making growing up so fun. We had it easy back then. I have not heard "Darling Forever" since I left Philly. You cannot find the same selection of old music outside of the WIBBAGE Range. I have your albums still with me all these years later. If you put a nickel on the needle then
they sound better. Remember Memory Lane by Jimmy Charles? Well thanks for the memories. I carry them wherever I go. Now, you go in peace and enjoy your eternity. You deserve all good things, We'll miss you HY. Fly away.

We only just met Hyski a short time ago but we were able to spend many great hours conversing with one of the most unique men who landed on this planet earth. We can only say that our lives have been enriched due to this wonderful experience and for this we share the grief of the entire Lit Family. Our love goes out to Sam & Benna. Know we will always be there for you. Once again thank you for allowing us to share your Dad. The joy of being with Hy was a rare gift even though the time was too short. We will keep him forever in our hearts as the most genuine, generous and gentle human being that we were lucky enough to know. We love you Hyski.

A big part of my youth is gone. You could listen in at night when he was on WIBG and know that he was genuinely your friend. Went to the dance parties at my high school and once appeared on his TV show. Thank you, Hyski! Give the Rockin' Bird our best!

David Sutton

November 19, 2007

Hyski, on 9/10/77, you told "the old girl," "the grand old lady of Philadelphia radio," WIBG(moments before SHE passed away), to wait for you to come up to heaven "carrying that golden microphone" and "broadcasting to the angels."(As quoted from an aircheck of WIBG's last day on the air-9/10/77, via the Classic Philadelphia Radio website[www.philaradio.com].) Beginning thirty years, two months, and seven days to the day you said it, you are now doing exactly that. The Rock'n'Roll Radio Station in the Sky now has as its latest DJ, Philly's legendary "Hyski O'Rootie McVoutie O'Zoot".

I moved up here to NJ in 1988 from Dallas, Tx. The first station I tuned into was WOGL and have been listening to it ever since. I remember Hy Lit, Don Cannon and the rest of the D.J.'s.and staff. Hy brought back so many memories of my dancing and music days. He was and always will be, "one of a kind". He had a great personality, he loved his work, the music, and everyone that was involved in the old rock 'n'roll music. He will be missed by everyone that listened to his voice. The Lit family are in my prayers. If there is a rock 'n'roll Heaven, Hy is the DJ and having a real good time with all his friends.
