Garnet Gensel Obituary

CONIFER, N.Y. and LAKE LUZERNE, N.Y. Garnet M. Gensel, affectionately known as Gump or Slim, age 85, died Saturday evening, March 29, 2008, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Ken Deuel following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born on Sept. 21, 1922, in Conifer, N.Y., he was the son of William and Carolyn (Peasley) Gensel. He was a graduate of Tupper Lake High School. Gump was an honorably discharged World War II U.S. Army veteran. He married his childhood sweetheart, Ellen Mae Thomas, on June 14, 1947, in Conifer. Mrs. Gensel died on Feb. 9, 2006. Gump was employed at International Paper in Corinth as a Millwright for 36 years prior to his retirement in 1983. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club of the mill. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a marksman in both pistol and rifle. He was a handyman who could make and fix most anything. He always made time to take his kids, grandkids and friends fishing. He was an avid reader. Gump was a member of EMBA Club of Corinth, the Dead Creek Hunting Club and the Nomis Hunting Club, both in Conifer. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years, Ellen Mae Gensel; three sisters: Mildred Doriguzzi, Pauline Richmond and Helen Gregory; three brothers: Glen Gensel, Harry Gensel and Darwin Gensel. Survivors include three daughters, Susan Corrigan and her husband, Thomas, of Glen Lake, Sally Deuel and her husband, Kenneth, of Lake Luzerne, and Stacey Gensel of Conifer; five grandchildren: Maureen Lanfear of Hadley, Sean Corrigan and his wife, Melissa, of Queensbury, Sonia Deuel-Guilder and her close friend, Spencer Parsons, of Waterford, Paul Deuel and his wife, Tara, of Lake Luzerne, Kenny "Gump" Deuel and his companion, Wendy Fuller, of Lake Luzerne; a grandson-in-law, Alfred "A.J." Guilder of Hadley; eight great-grandchildren, Ashleigh Guilder, Patrick Lanfear, Kara Lanfear, Paul Deuel II, Keaton Guilder, Kiernan Corrigan, Jessica Deuel, Alivia Deuel; his brothers-in-law: Paul Thomas of Syracuse, Sydney Thomas of Stillwater and Mervin Thomas and his wife, Joyce, of Conifer; several loving nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Dean Doriguzzi. Friends may call Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brewer Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Church St., Lake Luzerne. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home with the Rev. Michael Burkley, officiating. Burial will be in Gale Cemetery, Childwold, later in the spring. Contributions in Gump's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 959 state Route 9, Mount Royal Plaza, Queensbury, NY 12804 or a charity of one's choice.
