John Marcantonio Obituary

SOUTH GLENS FALLS John J. Marcantonio, 83, of South Glens Falls passed away Friday, March 28, 2008, at Glens Falls Hospital. Born on June 27, 1924, in Glens Falls, he was the son of the late Peter and Assunta (George) Marcantonio. John was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy, Glens Falls. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in World War II. He worked in the produce department of A & P Grocery Store for 40 years. John served as an officer for the UFCW local meat cutters union. John retired after working another 10 years at International Paper Co. in Corinth. He was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Church, South Glens Falls. During the late 1940s and 1950s, he was a semi-pro baseball player with the Glens Falls Doblers where he was known for hitting the long ball (some say across Glen Street from the Crandall Park backstop). Fall Saturday afternoons were spent watching Notre Dame football. He loved to work around the house and during the winter built an ice rink for his sons and friends to play ice hockey. John was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Jimmy Marcantonio, sister, Margaret Marcantonio and his sister-in-law, Mary Marcantonio. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Mary (O'Brien) Marcantonio of South Glens Falls; his son, John Marcantonio and his wife, Shelly, of Glens Falls, his son, Ray Marcantonio and his wife, Theresa, of Leesburg, Va.; his brother, Sarto Marcantonio and his wife, Teresa, of Hudson Falls, his brother, Ed Marcantonio of Glens Falls and several cousins, nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Saratoga Avenue, South Glens Falls. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, South Glens Falls. Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at Regan and Denny Funeral Home, 94 Saratoga Ave., South Glens Falls. The family would like to extend their gratitude to John's nurses, Dorothy, Lisa, and Rose whose love and care during this time will never be forgotten. Also, thank you to Dr. Sean Bain and Dr. Amy Hogan-Moulton for their care. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to St. Joseph's House of Grace, 33 Henry St., Glens Falls, NY 12801.

To the family of John, I always looked forward to seeing John come in every week at the nursing home to bring his sister lots of chocolate, he always had a funny story to tell me. He was always so cheerful. He always talked about his family, he would boast so being so proud of all of you, and his cheeks would get so red! I was fortunate enough to see him occasionally and catch up on a few things over the past few years. I will remember him for the sweet man he was. How strange it is to read about all the interesting things he had done in his life, yet he always spoke of others, not himself. My thoughts go out to you and your families.
